    Hi Pauline

While James Edward's mother may be maiden name MILLWARD - she may not have married Mr DIXON as a MILLWARD - she could have been a widow or a divorcee, and remarried under her former married name.....

You would need JE's birth cert to confirm, but the following looks very likely to me.....

    MARRIAGE

    http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/cheshirebmd/marriages.html

    http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

Dec Qtr 1894 Congleton, in St James, Congleton, Cheshire

    Susan MILLWARD and

    Benjamin PROCTOR

CENSUS 1901: 4 Clannay Street, Tunstall, Staffordshire

    RG13; Piece: 2592; Folio: 101; Page: 39

Head: Benjamin PROCTOR 33, Fustian Cutter Foreman, b Black Bank, Staffs.(born abt 1868)

Wife: Susan PROCTOR 29, Fustian Cutter, b Langley Nr macclesfield, Cheshire

Son: John R PROCTOR 6, b Congleton Cheshire

Son: Ben PROCTOR 4, b Congleton Cheshire (born abt 1897)

Son: Harry PROCTOR 3, b Congleton Cheshire

Dau: Amelia PROCTOR 1, b Congleton Cheshire

Father: John PROCTOR 83, Retired Collier, b Highlane Nr Alsagar (Bank), Cheshire

Mother: Louisa PROCTOR 78, b Wolverhampton Staffs

In 1881 Census: John and Louisa PROCTOR are in Congleton, Cheshire with their children, including 12 yr old Benjamin

BETWEEN March 1901 and Dec 1914

Either: DIVORCE of Benjamin PROCTOR and Susan MILLWARD

    Or: DEATH of Benjamin PROCTOR

    POSSIBLE DEATH:

    http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

Benjamin PROCTER age 43 (born abt 1869) Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire

    Mar Qtr 1912

    MARRIAGE:

    http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/cheshirebmd/marriages.html

    http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

Dec Qtr 1914 Congleton in Congleton Civil Marriage, Congleton Cheshire

    Susan PROCTOR and

    James DIXON

    WW1 DEATH:

    http://www.cwgc.org/

(Private )Ben PROCTOR age 22 of the UK, died 17 Sep 1918 (born abt 1896)

7th Btn, South Wales Borderers, 7/19202

Notes: Son of Susan DIXON (formerly PROCTOR), of 25, Astbury St., Congleton, Cheshire, and the late Benjamin PROCTOR

    Grave/Memorial Ref:VI. E. 18.

    Cemetery D'OIRAN MILITARY CEMETERY

Note: The CWGC family information, in this case regarding the parentage of Ben DIXON, can in some cases be compiled well after the death of the soldier. Therefore it cannot be assumed that Benjamin PROCTOR his father, was deceased by Sep 1918. It may be that Susan and Benjamin were divorced btw 1901 and 1914 and that she remarried as a divorcee, not as a widow.

If the above is correct and Susan DIXON, formerly PROCTOR nee MILLWARD is JE's mother, then she would have been abt 43 when JE was born, perhaps explaining why there is just the one birth in Congleton of a child DIXON, mms MILLWARD.

    Cheers

Wow AnnieB. Thankyou so much for that information. There's so much detail there, that it'll take me a month to digest it

Yes you're probably right on James's parents It never crossed my mind that she could have been a widow or divorced.

Once again thankyou AnnieB for your valid time and help.

    Oh Hi by the way

You're welcome Pauline And Hi Back

If that turns out to be right, it will be interesting to see how many PROCTOR half siblings JE had! I just edited above and put in the year of the possible death of Benjamin PROCTOR Snr (it's spelled PROCTER in the FreeBMD).

    Cheers

    Hi AnnieB

I found a marriage for Louisa and John's daughter Eunice,

she married a George Woodward in 1887.

The senario is now that there was only 2 George's in the death index of cheshire bmd one being George Woodward born 1896 died 1945 in Congleton aged 49 which fits in with Eunice's son also named George.

The other George was born 1876 and died 1955 in Congleton aged 79. I wonder if he told porkies about his age on the census as he would have been 9 years younger than his wife Eunice.

I also looked at the CWCG and the photo of Ben Proctor's resting place. It looks well nice.
