Thread: Caroline Elizabeth McClelland

Born in 1861/62 was my G Grandmother Caroline Elizabeth McClelland. The 1871 Census has her aged 9 years born in Ilsey. Caroline was the daughter of Robert McClelland and Harriett. I just find it strange that all Carolines siblings births are recorded but not hers. Can anyone help. I have posted this search before but thought perhaps it might be worth another go. I think Ilsey could be Hilsea but I,m not sure. Her Father Robert McClelland served in the Royal Artillery. I have all the other births recorded for Robert and Harriett from 1852 until 1864 for five other daughters. Perhaps Caroline was born under another name and changed at Baptism like her sister Agnes born 1864? Later changed at Baptism to Harriett Agnes. Most likely named so after her Mother Harriett who died in 1864.

There is an Ilsey in Berkshire but I have only checked out the Portsmouth area such as for Hilsea Barracks. I wonder if Berkshire might be the go here? Later Census for my G Grandmother do state Portsmouth as place of birth. I cant believe there is no Baptism for her anywhere to be found nor a birth ref when all her siblings can be found. I have always thought it is something to do with her first name. I wont give up on this one as I feel in my heart there is something somewhere out there to be found on her. Hmmm Berkshire.

This is what I have for siblings names. Agnes born and died 1852 . Laura Elizabeth born 1860 Weeden Beck died 1860. Emily 1858 Aldershot. Harriett born 1857 Northampton,Agnes born 1864 Aldershot later changed at Baptism to Harriett Agnes. Nothing on my Caroline to offer.

Seline? My GG Grandfathers second wife was Ellen Selina but they had no children to my knowledge.

Slizzy sorry to go on but my old bones tell me its something to do with her first names. Maybe I,m wrong but... On my Great Grandfathers Royal Artillery Papers it states wifes name Elizabeth Whitehead then there is a line through the name Elizabeth. A correction was made Caroline Elizabeth Whitehead. The Census have her for Caroline then Elizabeth. I dont think she liked her first name or was that her first name? The Marriage Cert does state Caroline Elizabeth though. My Nan and her sisters Birth Certs show Caroline as Mother then on some its Elizabeth. What a to do. She,s out there but noone can find her.

Thanks for all your help. A friend of mine went to Kew for me on this one as well but nothing. As long as I have life in my body I wont except that my Great Grandmothers Birth or Baptism refs are not to be found. What do you mean by Local Reg Office? I did pay for a search from a place in Portsmouth but nothing turned up. I am wondering now about Berkshire and Ilsey. Strange how the 1871 Census state Ilsey but the rest dont.
