    Default WHITBY PARISH RECORDS

Please could someone tell me if Parish Records or Bishop's Transcripts still exist for Whitby, North Yorkshire from the 1790s? If so, are they accessible to the public, and where can they be seen?

There are two men with the same name who could be the groom in a 1793 marriage record. If the Marriage Register shows the groom's place of birth, it will establish which one he was.

    Grateful for any help.

Thanks very much for the quick reply, Slizzy.

I've no idea who/what/where 'The Borthwick' is, but I'll look it up.

The LDS have filmed Whitby registers...........you could order them to view at your local LDS family history centre. Good luck Emmy.

Hi Emmyo - it's fairly unlikely that records at that time will have the kind of information you are looking for (so don't spend money on it!)

If you are stuck pm me the details and I will see if I can find the record at the Society of Genealogists Library

    Hi emmyo

The marriage record doesn't give the information you were hoping for -

Thomas Simey bach, sailor and Hannah Boynes spinster, both of Whitby (which doesn't mean born there necessarily) married by banns - witnesses Sarah Cavallier, Barbara Craig, John Gale

There is no baptism for Thomas in Whitby so he definitely comes from another parish

Christening Hannah Boynes Oct 9 1770 (born 25 Sep) daughter of Jeremiah a sailor and Ann

Checked the Washington records - baptism of Thomas Simey as on the IGI - 25 Feb 1771 son of George Simey a labourer

No signs of a Thomas Simey marrying in the parish

Checked the marriage of George Simey & Ann Hood - the only additional information is the witnesses William Todd & John Todd

So still unable to connect the 2 branches though it looks very likely. Most people hit similar situations in their trees at some point!

    Hello Gillian,

Thank you very much for taking the trouble to find so much information. It has saved me a long journey, so I'm extremely grateful.

As you say, most researchers hit 'brick walls' at some stage, and this is just one of mine - probably the most irritating!

I've been searching for five years for Thomas's birth record, and others have also tried. We'll just have to hope we can find him one day in Durham.

The shipbuilders, sailors and merchant seamen in my family tree have appeared up in many locations, so Thomas could crop up anywhere here or abroad, or very likely not at all.

Best of luck with your research.

    Kind regards,
