    Default A Tantalising Quest...

This is one for the experienced - unlike myself I'm afraid.

I have been trying for a long time to prove if there is a link between Benjamin Gower c1743 married Hannah Utten c1747 and Samuel Gower born c1745 and married Sarah Edwards c1744. All born Weybread Suffolk.

Sarah and Samuel are confirmed as buried in Weybread but I don't know where. They were married in St Mary the Virgin, Pulham, Norfolk in 1768 (source LDS)

I have plenty of children for both but no parents for the gentlemen and no relatives for Hannah, either.

Is anyone up for the challenge or can you point me in the direction as to where to look?

I would love to be able to solve this one even if it means getting in the car at last and travelling to Weybread!

    Hi Tina,

You will now need to find the parents of both in the parish records to find out if they are brothers. Unless someone has the parish records for Weybread it might mean that car journey.

    Thanks Starlight.

I suppose my next question is:

"Does anyone out there have the parish records for Weybread??? Or know where I will find them?"

Or am I destined to make the car journey...

    Hi Tina,

You could try e-maiing a volunteer on this web site

    Thanks Slizzy.

I have already jumped the gun and had two volunteers on this doing a look -up. Results back are very disappointing as there is no sign of any Gower family in Weybread at all (1735 - 1750).

Also no sign of a marriage yet.

Makes me wonder where the CLD are getting their information?

I am now trying the lady from the site that you have sent me.

Tina are you going on their marriage as to say b. Weybread, if your Gower was living there he would say of this parish at time of wedding, doesnt mean always born of that parish.

    Hi Chris,

    Thanks for the reply.

It is the CLS site that claims the Weybread link but I am leaning more towards Benjamin being from Alburgh.

There is also no wedding listed in Weybread in the parish registers that I can find so far.

I have now found a couple of children there so am trying to work backwards.

    Not giving up yet....

    Hi Tina

When you are using the family search (IGI) site you need to be very careful. If the record is 'extracted' ie taken from parish registers and gives exact dates it is probably OK.

If as with your Gowers a christening is a 'submitted' record ie by a descendent and gives only an approximate date it is almost certainly simply a guess from the marriage date. So if there isn't an exact date for an event in Weybread you can be pretty certain it didn't take place there - someone just thought it did.

    Thanks Gillian.

I think this is almost certainly what has happened and am now disregarding this information and searching parish registers from other leads.

You have no idea how many people have come back to me in the last week who have been stuck at this point due to the information being incorrect....never give up!
