Thread: JOHN DORAN

Hi,



My ggg granddad was John Doran and on his son's marriage cert in 1886 it states him as being a seaman and married to a Joan, (poss Jean) Quinn; however on his son's death cert of 1912 it states him as being a gardener and was married to an Ellen Lee. Unfortuanately, even though they lived in Glasgow in 1886 I don't have a death certificate for him! Also, I can only find his son's marriage and death cert and not a birth cert.



I know that John came from Ireland, family rumours state the Wexford/Wicklow areas but some say Dublin.



Does anyone have any clue where I can get further info from as I have reached a complete dead end here - I have searched Origins, Ancestry and the usual places but cannot get a match. I am beginning to wonder if my gran was right when she proudly said that there was a connection to travelling families, (whether with Joan Quinn or Ellen Lee), god only know!

What is the name and year of birth of John's son and do you know if there were other children ?

His date of birth varies on whatever document you look at .... it is defo the same person, (same wife and children and other family members that can be varified); this said, his age is 29 on the 1891 cencus but 47 on the 1901, I can only presume that his irish accent made it sound like forty seven but perhaps he was saying 37? His wife is down as being 27 in 1891 and 40 in 1901 but on his death certificate it states that he died in 1923 aged 54 so as you can see everything is extremely confusing. Oh, and on his marriage cert of 1886 it states that he is 26, (quite hard to read) and she is 24! So his date of birth hovers between 1855 and 1869! At the time of his marriage both of them lived at 103 Dale Street, Clydebank, Glasgow



This said, there were rumours that one of the John Doran's was actually born in England earning him the nickname English Jack, possibly Liverpool area, what a surprise - that narrows it down then lol and his dad is down as a quay labouror.

there is a john doran born around 1884 bootle, liverpool. he is on 1891 census as son of arthur and Mary. Arthur is a dock labourer

Sorry for not getting back sooner, I wasn't getting topic notifications. I have only found two marriages of a John Doran is 1866. Can you confirm the name of his spouse as neither of the ones I have found are in Glasgow.
