without knowing more details (which shouldnt be put on open forums ) it is hard to say . i am assuming your mother married someone called nicholson . do you have a marriage certificate . this would give a date of marriage. was this after your birth date. this might indicate (but not necessarily) that you were born to someone other than your father (sorry if this is tough to hear but it sounds like you would like to know the truth).

It sounds like your birth was re registered - this is usually to add the fathers name that hasnt been given if they later married. this is obviously not true in your case. in some cases a fathers name can be taken off if the wrong father has been named.

you could try obtaining a copy of the original certificate to see what it says (cost £7)

You did not say if you were born in the UK but assuming you were it might be an idea to ring the local registry office and make an appointment to see the registrar who may be able to help. Take the birth certificate you have found , and any other stuff you have (National Insurance card primary school registration etc.

Information gets garbled for silly reasons ...like women telling their husbands they are younger than they are and the husband recording the wrong date therafter....Hope this helps
