Default Help Needed - Can't trace Thomas Evans b1879

    Hi all,

I am new to this forum but it looks extremely good. I'm hoping someone can help me find details of my grandfather-in-law, Thomas Evans born c.1879.

I have his marriage certificate - he married Harriet Limb at Mexborough Parish Church, Yorkshire on 9/9/1907. His father was also called Thomas and both have their occupations listed as labourer.

On the marriage cert. Harriet and Thomas's addresses are listed as NewSt, Mexborough. I haven't been able to find Thomas on any of the Mexborough census's

I have my Mother-in-law's, Sarah (aka Sally) birth certificate too. Thomas's occupation is listed as colliery labourer. Sarah was born 16/9/1916 in Adwick-Le-Street, Yorkshire. They were living at 46 Church St in Adwick.

I've found loads of Thomas Evans born around 1769 with a father also called Thomas Evans but I as I don't know if they were born in Yorkshire or moved there to work I can't work out which one is our Thomas.

Harriet's father, Isiaih was a coal miner and was born in Leicestershire, Harriet was born in Wakefield. So families seemed to travel around a lot.

I am really stumped - living in Somerset I don't have chance to get up to the Doncaster Records office so would be grateful for any pointers....

    Thank you

    Jill

    Hi there

I found Harriet in 1901 at 32 Edlington Street in Conisbrough, which is the next village to Mexborough (almost attached these days). She is a domestic servant for a coal miner's family 37 yr old Joseph Smith.

    1901 England Census

I suspect that Joseph Smith is twice married, and Jim's mother died. I also suspect that Alice is the mother of the two youngsters, but am unable to find the marriage Joseph Smith and Alice Kay.

This census sheet is No 55 of 58 and I was not willing to trawl through them all, on the off chance of finding Thomas!!

However, it seems pretty fair that Harriet and Thomas met in either of the two villages.

You will be able to find comfirmation in three years time, when the 1911 Census becomes available to us!!

I appreciate that this doesn't really help!!

    Best wishes

    Mark

    Hi Mark

Thank you for finding Harriet in the 1901 census - I had seen the details before but wasn't sure if it was the same Harriet as the info we have on her is that she was born in Stanley in West Yorks. However, knowing that there were quite a few errors on census docs depending on who completed and transcribed them - this could be the same one.

Your email did help me as it made me thing about Thomas. He was 27 when he married Harriet and my husband, Bob always felt that the 1907 marriage date wasn't quite right. His mum, Sarah was the second youngest of 9 kids, born in 1916 and he knew that she had a much older brother called Harry and couldn't work out how it all fitted. Anyway, thinking about Joseph having a second marriage, made me wonder about Thomas - Harriet could be his second wife?? So I widened my search criteria - and I have found a Thomas Evans married to a Mary Ann Brook in Dewsbury. They have a son Harry b. 1900 and Annie b. 1897. I wonder whether Mary died? A bit of a long shot - especially as there are about 5 other Thomas's who live a 10 mile radius of Mexborough who could fit the bill.

I wish they would release the 1911 census early!!

    Thanks for your help

    Jill
