Hoping someone can help me get further back with my ancestry.



My grandmother born Hilda Cock (1910-1942) Colne Valley Huddersfield who married Samuel Bottom. Her father was called Tom Cock (1871-1937) also born Colne Valley, and mother Annie Elizabeth Cock nee Stevens (1877-1962).2 sisters called Kathleen (1906-1932 and Bertha born 1905 and whom may still be alive.

I too have Cock's in my family from the Colne valley, Cock was my mother's maiden name. During my research I have found the name misspelt on many census returns and I think that's the case here with your Tom, as I cannot find him on the census with surname Cock. However a lot of Colne Valley Cock's were known as COCKS and this was often spelt by the enumerators as COX. So........... in 1881.

To be certain of who Tom's father was you may have to buy Tom's birth cert, they cost £7. Or you may be lucky and find his christening in the parish registers in Huddersfield Central Libray.



I have done a marriage search for surname Cock marrying an Elizabeth between 1866-71, and come up with two possibles.



Marriages Sep 1870. Huddersfield 9a349

Joe Cock to Elizabeth Mary Blackburn

Although the 1871 marriage seems late as Tom's birth was registered Sept qrt. 1871, I do think it's the most likely as there's a death record for a James about right age, but not for a Joe.
