    Default Skaife?

I have been on IGI for Pateley Bridge where my Skaifes hail from, but am confused. I know years ago Skaife was spelt Scaife, Scafe etc. My dilemma is I have a list of potential children born to William Skaife and Jane. Do I count all the ones listed as born to William and Jane, there are 16 children all with these parents, but sometimes William's name is spelt Skaife, Scaife, Skaiffe, Scafe, etc. From what I have learned the spelling was due to whoever wrote it down for the records.

What do you think, since they changed the spelling around quite a bit, its very confusing. What are the odds on the children all having parents with the same fornames, and not being related.

Incedently Benson Skaife my direct ancestor, is on IGI with his name spelt as Scafe, and later spelt Skaife.

    Hi Julie,

I think there are at least two families here, maybe more. Ann Skafe was baptised 02/03/1795. Sally Scafe was baptised two Months later 03/05/1795.

I think you will need to find the marriages on the parish records to see how many combinations of William and Jane there were around that time.

Ok thanks, is it possible to do that on line or do I need to go the the offices where the records are kept?

    Hi Julie,

I'm sorry I don't know anything about records for that area. Maybe someone else will know.

    Hi Julie,

I have Parish Records for marriages in Rotherham only, so unable to help you out either.

Hope someone else can pick up on your post and give you the info you require.

Hi Julie, I see you live in North East England, anywhere near York? As the Borthwick Institute holds the parish registers for Pateley Bridge.

Hi SLIZZY, I could visit York next month when I have some holidays from work.

I always thought it was Northallerton that held the records for that area.?

Hi Julie, I THINK, though not certain that Northallerton have them as well. If you look at the link I posted for Borthwick York, it does say they have Pateley Bridge registers, I'd e-mail them first just to be sure, but as far as I'm aware York holds most, if not all the Yorkshire parish registers. If Northallerton is easier for you e-mail them too.
