Default David Gigham - Father to William Gigham, - Wakefield

As anyone got access to marriage records around 1815 to 1821, William born about 1821, so presume David married before then, but when and to whom.

I'v spent hours and hours searching marriage/birth records, and I can't help but think obsessively, that "Gigham" is an houdini type character., even though I've actually seen the name on legal microfiche images. Have also checked up on the surname Giggal, found nothing to be certain about.

Can anyone help and put me out of my misery, please? I estimate that this David Gigham would have been born around 1790 to 1800, am also thinking they may have been illiterate and thats why there's trace. will be obliged for any idea's!

    Cheers & Regards,

    DaveL

    Hi Dave,

I have a similar problem to you in that I could find no marriage or birth for a William Bradshaw. After months of digging around I was lucky enough to find a child of theirs born in last q of 1837. The birth cert stated father William Bradshaw!

Then Lancs OPC transcribed his marriage and he isnt a Bradshaw at all but a Wood! So why name all his children with his step fathers name and why use his birth name on his marriage cert? Who knows but I still havent found his birth parents and wonder will I ever.

I have had a look round for your David but I havent found anything yet, sorry and good luck!

    Hi Light,

Many thanks for your two pieces of info feedback on David "Houdini" Gigham search problem, in desperation, I've contacted a local Family History Society, who advertise that they have access to 1813-1837 marriage indexes, will let you know the outcome

    Hello Dave and Light,

Just to recap on David Gigham:

    1841 Census – Clayton Hill, Stanley with Wainthorpe – HO107/1271/9 Folio 38 Page 24

David GIGGAL – 50 – Engine Worker – Yes (born in county)

    Dinah GIGGAL – 50 – Yes

    David GIGGAL – 15 – Engine Worker – Yes

    John GIGGAL – 10 – Yes

    Elizabeth GIGALL – 10 – Yes

    John WHITELEY – 15 – Coal Miner – Yes

    Sophia WHITELEY – 15 - Yes

    Found this on 1851 Census:

1851 Census – Potovens? Alverthorpe, Stanley cum Wrenthorpe – HO107/2326

    David GIGGILLl – H.M – 65 – Engine Tenter – Wakefield

    Hannah GIGGILL – Wife – 65 – Engine Tenter’s Wife – Manley? Park, Derbys

    John WHITELEY – Visitor.UM – 26 – Labourer – Mirfield, Yorks

    William GREY – Grandson – 6 – Wakefield

Please excuse my ignorance with place names

You'll notice that JOHN WHITELEY is on both censuses. I've searched the IGI and found possible marriage of David Giggal & Hannah Whiteley:

    DAVID GIGGAL

    Spouse: HANNAH WHITELEY

Marriage: 22 JUL 1839 Wakefield, Yorkshire

The Dinah on the 1841 census could possibly be Hannah??? but of course on the 1841 census it doesn't show the relationship of people. So, was Hannah Whiteley a Widow when she married David Giggal (a Widower) and John Whiteley & Sophia Whiteley were her children to a previous marriage??

On the IGI I haven't been able to find any baptisms of David's children.

Look forward to hearing how you get on with the Family History Society

    Light;Nanna;Notebook,

    Reference the "Gigham/Giggill/Giggle" Saga!!

The response I received from Wakefield Family History society was - no trace anywhere of David Gigham! So donning my "Poiret" thinking cap and using some of the names your replies came up with, I've found a David & Hannah Giggill from Stanley, who I've been able to trace back and prove were William Gigham/Giggill/Giggle's Parents! Either the writing in those days was very bad,(quite understandable) I suppose, or the "transcribers" were worse still.

The clue/hint that helped me to hit "bullseye", was Christian names., referring to the 1851 census, they have a son called David, a daughter called Hannah, 1 grandfather's name/ both grandmother's names, later on the 1861 census, they have a son called William - after his Father and other grandfather, and a daughter Margaret - named after Mum!

So, after an "on and off" period of 8 years, I'm stuck with what surname to

give William - marriage certificate clearly states "Gigham., but Family Tree Wise, I've got names/linage going back to the 1780's, all

    32 Great Great Great Grandparents

    16 Great Great Grandparents

    8 Great Grandparents

    4 Grandparents

    Place names I've "visited" - Altringham,Barnsley,Burnley,Huddersfield,Leeds,

    Manchester,Runcorn,Sheffield,Widnes,Wigan and nearby Wakefield.

Many Many bucketfulls of grateful thanks and appreciation for everyone's

valuable help., just got to put it all down in black and white so that it's understandable, and look out for the "Family Tree Layout" being available

Hope you've not fallen asleep with my "waffling", and many thanks again.

    Many Kind regards,

    DaveL

    Hello Dave,

So pleased that you've managed to knock down that brick wall. Just out of curiosity, did David marry Hannah Whiteley?
