Thread: Winifred Gertrude Meredith or Luttman?

Hello,



I am trying to unravel a puzzle as I have discovered that my Grandmother is actually registered under the surname of Meredith and not Luttman as she was later known. The search has gone a little dead but I know she was born in 1917 in London.



Winifred married Herbert J Gower in 1939 but i cannot find details of her mother/father/family at the moment.



Any bright ideas out there??

Going on the details you have given i.e

Winifred Gertrude Meredith born Sept Qtr 1917 Lambeth 1D 454 and her marriage to Herbert J Gower March Qtr 1939 Chelmsford 4A 925 Meredith/Luttman.

I have checked for a previous marriage to a Luttman without trace.

(1) Do you have either the Birth Certificate or the Marriage Certificate, both of which should give you her fathers name, if not you will need to apply for a copy from the following link:

Failing this there is a possibility that the name Luttman was added after the initial registration of her birth.

I have a first cousin who was named Michael John at registration, but was later renamed and baptised Arthur Edwin, this is just a thought but may be worth checking out.

Thank you so much for replying.



I have been digging away for weeks but should really resort to getting the birth certificate, I know. It was by chance that I came up with the Meredith link.



It is very interesting but I am assuming that Winifred was possibly illegitimate.



I have now found a sister, Vera JL Luttman (April, May, June 1926) Wandsworth but was told that she was the eldest child so that factoid was also incorrect. Apparently she committed suicide by drowning in a river in the 50's but I haven't started on that search yet!



I have also found a James A Luttman (Jan, Feb, Mar 1923) Wandsworth.



Peter Luttman (Oct, Nov, Dec 1934) Wandsworth died in 1990 gave the above names and more to my father.



I have spotted Sarah A (Oct, Nov, Dec 1914) Lambeth but no-one has mentioned this name as yet.



I am searching for a Dolly/Dorothy, Miriam and a Gladys. Have come up with Muriel Luttman Jan, Feb, Mar 1937 Billericay and Doris G Luttman Jul, Aug, Sep 1927 also Billericay but not sure if these are red herrings. However Billericay is in the right area as Essex is where most of the family ended up!



Any snippets linked to these would be fabulous!

Update to my quest!

I now have the birth certificate for Winifred Gertrude Meredith born 16th September 1917 to Lily Eliza Meredith of 25 South Lambeth Road. However there is no father mentioned

The trail has gone a little dead again as I have been trawling through looking for a marriage of Lily Eliza to a Luttman but have not come up with anything. I know that they had children up until at least 1940ish.



Can anyone help with this look up as my eyes are crossed with fatigue at the moment

Got thrown by the fact that Gertrudes birth certificate states her mother as Lily Eliza.



Will continue proving along these lines now. Wonder if she changed the name slightly as her daughter was illegitimate to throw people off the trail??

I am aware of the family you refer to. But not sarah.
My mother was Doris Gwendoline (Dolly).Is there anything you were unable to find out?
