    Default Moshe Ha. COHEN HART

    Listers,

Can anyone help out with any information on Moshe Ha COHEN HART. I understand he married Leah BENJAMIN, I have no date of the marriage. The only date I have is the date of the birth of the first child, 1818c Zalig Solomon Hart. They had 8 children. The last arriving in 1838.

Not a lot to go on but I would appreciate any help.

    Regards to all, Ray [Melb]

hello - On the 1861 census Zalig states he was born Whitechapel c1818 - It is VERY possible that Hart is not his birth name - many immigrants changed their names in order to "merge" with their new neighbours & prevent any poss bad feelings.

    Scottsheat,

I was thinking he was originally a COHEN and took on the name HART as per your suggestion.

What would you think of that?

    Regards, Ray

Hello Ray, I have been doing this for very many years &, nothing really surprises me anymore as, basically, anything goes - just as it does today

It's difficult to guess but would advise: one of my ancestors came over from France during the 1730's - Name was Sault & this was changed to Salt - likewise his christian name of Jean was changed to John so, dependant on where they were from originally , I would look for something very similar to Hart - H......t & variances off - I think this is borne out by him being known as Soloman on a couple of the census - whereby he "dropped" the Zelig, as this would not be English &, used his middle name instead - this would def make sense - but, obviously, I could be right off the wall as it may have been something totally unusal for the "English" tongue & pronounciation !!!

    Hi Scottsheat,

Just reading your notes and of course your right. My thinking after reading your thoughts is that we need to check the shipping lists perhaps and see if a Moshe HaCohen [Hart] entered the UK and when. If such a list even exists.

Trust all is well with you and yours, Hawk [AUSTRALIA]
