I can now go back to Thomas in 1871. I wasn't sure it was him but now have seen his father's occupation. I think it is as all the names here are Watermen.

If you want to go further back, you may have to get John's marriage certificate to find his fathers name. It looks as though he was still in England in 1841 and there are quite a few John James born c1826 in Dorset. Two are in Sherbourne. The names Cheffy/Cheffey/Chaffy in Dorset go back to the early 1700's in Dorset on the LDS site but I can't find a connection yet.
