Thread: Wyatts in Winchester

Apparently the Wyatts used their inheritance and purchased a hotel in Winchester, possibly near the King Alfred statue. It was taken over by a regiment as barracks & stabling... it then went broke after the regiment moved to Salisbury plain due to an epidemic of some sort. These Wyatts were by Great grandmother's siblings.

I've been searching but have got no where... any ideas on how to get a bit further... even the address of the hotel would be a start. I think it must have been between 1900 & the 1920's... 'ish

Have you got the name of the head of household as there are a lot of Wyatt families in the street directories.

The only lead I've got is the 1901 census.

Alice Wyatt has become Alice Jones (married to Henry Charles Jones), she is down as the wife of a 'Licenced victualler' (he appears to be employed on board ship ~ I haven't followed that one up yet).

Alice is living at 21 High street, Winchester, Parish of St Maurice. Also living with her are; her sister Maria, sister(Gerty) Edith and her brother Alfred who is employed as a barman.



The other members of the family that I know about (though not living with Alice) are;George, Elizabeth, Jane, James, Kate & Rose. (The missing girl is Ada, my G.Grandmother who opted to buy her house with her inheritance.)

1907, 1912-1913, 1916-1917, 1920, 1925, 1931-1932



I didn't notice many Hotels before 1931. Maybe I missed some, I'll look again tomorrow.

I've been looking at Kelly's for Winchester, 1898 & 1911... I'm sorting through both the private & commercial, and also Warrens, Winchester 1895. I'll let you know if I find anything. I've found that the dad died in 1894... so the family would have got the inheritance during that period & that is what they used to buy the hotel. I've also been in touch via email with the Army museums web site to see if they have any knowledge of the regiment that took over the hotel & inadvertantly caused it's demise!

Hello Catwoman , what part of the Wyatt line are you from ? my maiden name was Wyatt ,by any chance do you have a George Byron Wyatt and Isabella {Hougham } Wyatt in your line ?these were my 2nd. The "Wyatt " family name is of Norman - French origin ..the name "Guyot" in France became "Wyot" , "Wiat", "Wiatt" and "Wyatt" in England ,there is a unbroken line of generations from "Adam Guyot" ,who came into England with "William the Conqueror" in the year of {1066} ...Rosebud1
