Thread: George Gibson - Norfolk Any 1861 >

I'm completely stuck with my great grandfather George (Sidney/Sydney) Gibson, born about 1853, place unknown, but possibly Gorleston area.

The only definite info I have is his marriage to Elizabeth (Rose/Rosina) Hickling on 23/4/1874 at Great Yarmouth.

I've found her & the children on the 1871/1881 & 1901 Great Yarmouth census records, but not him.

He was a fisherman & his father was also George Gibson. Any pointers will be greatly appreciated

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

The certificate shows the marriage as having been at Great Yarmouth Parish Church on 23 Apr 1874 - George Gibson 21yr, fisherman of row 105 Yarmouth & Elizabeth Rosina Hickling, 20yr of Row 125. His father was George Gibson, a bricklayer & her father, Robert Hickling, tailor.



The witnesses were a Reuben Riches and Elvia Withers. I haven't found any trace of her, but have found a Reuben Riches on census records, mostly at Row house addresses in Yarmouth, except one where he is shown as being aboard a ship at Falmouth in Cornwall. George is not listed in the crew. Otherwise there is no likely link between the two.



All of the 7 children of George and Elizabeth were born in Yarmouth between 1875 & 1891, and their births were registered by the mother. All theh birth certificates give father as George Gibson, Fisherman with, in respect of most of them, a second name of either Sidney or Sydney.



2 of the children Sidney, bn 1886 and Lilian, (my grandmother), bn 1891, have a second forename of Gollop, which seems to have been "dropped" by my grandmother.



I have looked at the possibility of there being a clue in Gollop being the surname of a past relative but not been able to find a link there. It seems to have been a fairly uncommon name in East Anglia, but crops up frequently in the West Country.



Elizabeth's mother was a Mary Ann Clusterman, bn 1831 @ Yarmouth, and her grandfather a Peter Clusterman, bn 1783, probably in Rotterdam. He married an Amy Bachelder, bn 1801, at Gorleston in 1826



I'm pretty sure I'm on the right track as my Aunt Lily speaks of there having been family talk of a relative called Gotterman or similar.



Elizabeth died on 20 Oct 1915 at Yarmouth and is shown as the wife of George Gibson, a fisherman. The death was registered by the master of Yarmouth Infirmary.





That is pretty well all that I know, hope that some of it helps.

Thanks so much for all the info, there's now a lot to work with. I am going on holiday tomorrow so may not get a chance to search this one thoroughly, which I'm disappointed at, as it's one I could have got my teeth into, however I'm sure someone else will take up the search, but if not, I'll do look-ups when I get back from holiday, and may even be able to look tonight.

Thanks for your reply and for looking it up for me. However, I have had to discount him. He was the most likely of 4 possibilities from East Anglia that I found.



His birth cert shows born 20/08/1848 to George Gibson, Gardener & Hannah Cattermoule.



1851 he was at home with parents & family.



1861 & 1871 at Barking, as you say. 1871 shows him as a carpenter.

Subsequent censuses show him at Barking, Milton (Gravesend), Kent & Millom, Cumberland, all as a carpenter. He was married between 1871 & 1881 to Annie ?????.



As a side issue I haven't been able to find any census record for 1891 for his wife & family, only 1881 & 1901. That might, however, be down to errors in transcription on Ancestry.co.uk which I find contains far too many in respect of the UK. Unfortunately I have also drawn a blank as well on thegenealogist.co.uk for this year, so it may be that they were missed out on this census.



Anyway, thanks again for taking the trouble to have a look for me. If you do come up with any other ideas or suggestions I will greatly appreciate them.
