Thread: marriage?

I have not been able to find a marriage between Joseph Skaife and Jane Ellis. They were living in Hampsthwaite 1861 with their four sons, is it possible they never married (I always thought 'living in sin' was a no no in those days) On the 1871 census they have a visitor listed as father in law William Ellis (so I know I have the right name for 'wife')

The marriage was ...4thq 1851, vol 23 page 453 Knaresbro to Jane Ellis and Joseph Skaife.

I feel so silly, I have searched all over to find it. Thank you so much.
