    Default Skaife- Yorkshire

I know my g.g.grandfather Joseph Skaife was still living in Hampsthwaite on the 1901 census aged 75 years. I would like to visit the village and hopefully see where he is buried. I have been unable to find a death record for him. Do I need to ask at the church? I don't want to travel there only to be turned away. Has anyone else done anything similar?

    Hi Julie

I've just googled the village and it has its own community website. You could email them and they may be able to help you. I did this with a little village in Staffordshire and they were really helpful.

    Thats the link...Good Luck

Thanks for the quick replies, Slizzy can I ask where you found the death record?

Lozzie, I have been on the village site and found lots of info. I had not thought of e-mailing the site, I will try that.

    Thanks again.

I said it was Hampsthwaite because thats the name of the village site I found the info on. He is actually listed as living with Mary in Menwith & Darley, they have Thorntwaite and all the other 'villages' listed too. here is the link to the site which is very informative http://www.calverley.info/hampsthwaite.htm

I don't know whether these are classed as hamlets?

    Hi Julie,

Are you familiar with this site? It's great for the Harrogate /Knaresborough area. If you search for 'Skaife' quite a lot come up, maybe some will be your ancestors. Hope it's useful

I live in Hampsthwaite and have found www.calverley.info/hampsthwaite a very useful site (all the census/births/deaths/etc for Hampsthwaite and the nearby villages). You will find hoards of Skaifes on the record and you are probably related to them all! I have traced what I assume to be the record for your g.g.grandfather and his family history from 1841.If you follow the trail yourself and agree that he is entry 68 on the 1861 census then I think I have an interesting press report for you!
