Thread: name change goonan/newman

does anyone know where I would look up to find change of name details please.

My g grandfather was married then left and changed his name and supposedly got married again and had another family in his new name.



The details I have are: Edmond Goonan born 1873 Castlemaine (Vic) married Deborah Jane Rowley 1897 at Wickliffe, (Vic)

They had 4 sons, William Edmond, Arnald Foster, Edmond and Rowley.



Edmond (1873) then left family in Kalgoorlie West Aust approx 1910.

Then "hitched" approx 1923 to Veronica Eileen McKenna born 1899 Jarrahdale, West Aust.

Edmond and Eileen then went on to have 8 children.



Would love to know more.

On Edmond war records it lists his next of kin as Deborah Jane Newman, his first wife. Must have changed his name before he left her. Do hope someone can shed some light or tell me where to look.

Hi Gaye - I'm not sure if its the same in Australia but in England then as now you can call yourself what you like as long as it isn't done with any criminal intent. So there wouldn't be a record. Perhaps sometimes an announcement in a newspaper. But it seems most likely that he changed his name when he left his first family for whatever reason - to distance himself from them or maybe make it difficult for them to contact him?

I don't know if this will help as this was a lot more recent, but I changed my name by deed poll back in 2000. I have a copy of the deed, and so does the solicitor. If you know where he was living at the time, is there a way you can perhaps see if a law firm hold a copy in their archives?

Thanks for that tip. Will do a bit more research and see where he has been living, but really don't even know when he changed his name so may be a bit more difficult. Will give it a try anyway. Again thanks,

Have you got his marriage cert. to second wife to prove he remarried. I understand what Pam is saying, but like Gillian says they did call themsevles by alias names.My grt grandmother stated she was wed on census however she was not.

I have one that changed his name and it came to light after his death. Although it isn't on his death certificate a note was later added to his death entry.

Don't have his death cert but will make some inquiries on it.
