    Default Certificate Question

    Hi,

I have dicovered a birth / death in my Staveley for 1858. The girl only lived for one day.

My question is - in BMD both birth and death give the name Stavely, female, 3rd Quarter, Sedbergh and numbers 9a 5, would there be 1 certificate or 2 ?

    Ken.

    Hi,

I would presume there would be 2 different certs, 1 for birth and the other for the death, but you should have different reference numbers for both.

    Hope that helps?

If im wrong guys put me straight lol

    Hi

I too would have expected differant Ref Nos. but I have checked ancestry indexes and FreeBMD and both are

STAVLEY Female Sedburch Vol 9a Page 5 Sep Qtr 1858

There would still be 2 certificates, as I can't see how a death can be registered on the same cert as a birth....but I may be wrong!

Perhaps just order the birth certificate 1st and take it from there

    Hi,

I was doing some lookups for Silverfox in Scotland and came across several babies that died just after birth. In several cases I came across deaths at 3 hours, 2 days for example, but there was no birth registration for a few of these. I said at the time, maybe they were too upset and forgot to register the birth.

I haven't come across a birth registered without a death or both on the same certificates though.

    Hi,

This topic came up recently in a family history magazine. From 1837 a death had to be registered within 5 days, whereas a birth could be registered any time up to 6 weeks after the birth.

So as Starlight has said, may be the parents were too upset at the time to register the birth. It wasn't compulsory until 1875 to register a birth where the parent or informant had to attend the actual register office.

    Hi

Just to clarify: BOTH the birth and death have been registered........just that they both have the same ref number:

Births Sep 1858 (>99%) Stavley Female Sedbergh 9a5

Deaths Sep 1858 (>99%) Stavley Female Sedburgh 9a5

Those are from FreeBMD. I have also checked the indexes on Ancestry. Both the Birth AND the Death are given the same Vol & Page numbers.

    Hi All,

Thank you all very much for your comments.

I have emailed the GRO today with the query and the answer is that there is a birth certificate AND a death certificate.

They say that it is pure coincidence that the numbers are the same.

So we learn something every day don't we.

    Thanks again, Ken.
