Thread: John Neilson went to America - When?

I'm back again ...

I have a Great great granduncle - John Neilson born 9 October 1818 in Blairgowrie, Perthshire - who managed to 'disappear' before the 1841 Census was called.



Although provided for in his father's Extract Disposition and Settlement of 1847 (which indicated he was - at least - still alive then ) I'm glad to say he's turned up again in his sister Cecilia's Trust Deed of 1885 as a 'Baker, Brooklyn, New York' having £500 set aside from her estate and invested for him so he could benefit from the interest and other annual profits.



I'd like to know how I can find out when he emigrated. (Ellis Island doesn't go far enough back to be of any help.)

These two could be the same person as both listed as joiner's on the passenger lists. This is the nearest John Neilson by year of birth. I will see if I can trace him on the census later this evening to confirm if him or not. He could have changed occupations within that time.
