I'm back again ...
I have a Great great granduncle - John Neilson born 9 October 1818 in Blairgowrie, Perthshire - who managed to 'disappear' before the 1841 Census was called.
Although provided for in his father's Extract Disposition and Settlement of 1847 (which indicated he was - at least - still alive then) I'm glad to say he's turned up again in his sister Cecilia's Trust Deed of 1885 as a 'Baker, Brooklyn, New York' having £500 set aside from her estate and invested for him so he could benefit from the interest and other annual profits.
I'd like to know how I can find out when he emigrated. (Ellis Island doesn't go far enough back to be of any help.)
