    Default Clark

I am re-visiting part of my family tree I am not 100% sure of and need a professional second opinion.

I have never been absolutely certain that I have the correct mother and father for William Clark my GGrandfather who was born at Cockpen, Midlothian Scotland on the 8th of March 1832. The reason I've never been really sure is I was never able to pinpoint him with his mother, father and siblings on a cencus together, plus I found a death certificate for both his mother and father (I think) which showed his Father dying at a place called Gorgie Cottages in Edinburgh miles away from where his wife died at Borthwick. He was a Farmer near Borthwick, why did he die in Edinburgh?

I have most BMDs for the people concerned which I can supply if you would like to have a look. Better still if you would like to look at my family tree on Ancestry or Tribalpages I would be happy to let you have access to have a peek at what I've got.

Here is an extract of the part of my tree I'm concerned about,

    Thanks,

    John Clark (The Silverfox)

    Hi Anne,

OK, we seem to be along the same lines as I have the same information as you with the cencus at Harvieston Tall. However one of the problems I had from memory was the occupants and ages on the cencus between years.

For instance, what happened to Andrew Clark between 1851 and 1861 and why is Richard Clark shown as 15 on the 1851 cencus and 7 on the 1861. This is what confused me and gave me doubts about whether I had the right Clark family or not and the correct Father and mother for William.

I subsequently traced who I thought was his father to dying at Gorgie Cottages in Edinburgh, but with this little bit of confusion at Harvieston Tall (which is actually Toll, as its about 5 miles from where I'm sitting and I pass it every day in the car) I started to have real doubts about the credability of this part of my family tree.

Did I have the right Father* for William, how could I find out who HIS* father was with all this doubt?

    John..

Have had a look at the 1861 Census on SP.. the Richard age 7 is the grandson of William and Jean(Jane). That makes up for the discrepancies in the ages...

    Hi Anne,

    Been busy I see. No wonder I was unsure about this particular Clark Family with a son called Richard on one cencus and a grandson called Richard on another. Well done RAVEN }

As for Andrew, it's a shrewd guess but Andrew was 12 on the 1851 Cencus giving him a birth year of approx 1839.

I suppose it could be a year either way giving it to be 1838?

I see you've been using your credits on SP (Money to burn lady)

I'll make it up to you somehow.

Right, now that we have established that we now have the correct parents for William (William2 and Jean/Jane, I had a lot of fun with her by the way, not making up her mind what to call herself)

Can you see if you can coroborate my findings on who William2's father was. Try to ignore if you can what is on my family tree and start with a blank sheet, because if you think the Clark family was at Harvieston Toll was bad...........................

    JHN :-D

PS. The DVD of the Menin Gate arrived today, going to watch it now. If I can extract a clip from it using my techno wizzardry showing William on it I will and arrange send it to you!

    Father William Clark

Mother Catherine Begbie ( you have his mother as Helen Begbie?)

    Widower of Jane Ainslie.

Spot on Anne, Thats what I found. The reason for Helen was I couldn't find a William Clark with a Catherine Begbie BMD anywhere. So I made the assumption (said he grasping at straws) that it was either she was Catherine, Helen or vice-versa, She was known as Catherine at the time of William's death and Helen when she married to his father OR Williams parents were born outside Scotland. At this point it all went a little pear-shaped and I gave up and my search for my ancestors came to an abrupt end :-( At this poit I went off chasing Aitkens and of course the Carrs
