    Default late baptisms

Hi, I have 2 sisters Matilda Miller and Mary Miller being baptised several years after their births. Matilda born 20/3/1826 and bapt 4/12/1839.

Mary b 3/9/1822 bapt 1835. St MArk Kennington parish.

Would there be a reason that the baptisms were years after their births?

Siblings born in St MAry LAmbeth were William Alfred 1804, Louisa Sophia 1806, and John Joseph 1811. A gap of 11 years between them and Mary and MAtilda.

The parents were William Henry Miller and Sarah. Both parents seem to have died before 1841 census and the only one I can find is Mary on 1841 living with a CAroline Miller aged 70 [possibly Williams sister?]

William had a brother Elisha Miller and another relative appearing on Marys marriage is John James Miller [ a son of John and Eleanor] yet he says he is an uncle of Marys children in a later census.

Would the actual film have more info that the IGI entry?

Can anyone shed any light on this puzzling family?

    Hi seeker

Could I ask how you know that Mary & Matilda and the other children are part of the same family?

Hi Gillian. Mary was my direct ancestor and Matilda definatley her sister. I found Louisa Sophia with Marys children in later census and got her marriage certificate and found that her father William Miller was a potter as was the occupation for Marys Father William, so they are sisters. William Alfred and John Joseph are also listed with the same parents on the St Mary Lambeth baptisms, so all are siblings. William was born in St Mary LAmbeth as was his brother Elisha Givney Miller but I cant find a Caroline born [sister?] or his marriage to a SArah [possible they were married in another part of London]or the marriage of his parents William and Mary [some kind person searched the St MAry Lambeth film pre 1800].

Elisha lived in the Strand so its possible they were all originally from there.

Elisha and a John James Miller seem to have been a big part in the life of MAry and Louisa after William and Sarah have gone [marriage certs, census etc] I think William Alfred and John Joseph may have died before 1837 as I cant find deaths but they are not on any census.

    Hi Seeker

I'm also trying to unravel the puzzle of Mary & Matilda Miller plus their 'siblings'. I'm beginning to wonder if, perhaps, Sarah died & William Henry remarried .

The question of Matilda's late baptism has me stumped as well, as does the fact that William Henry is listed as a potter on some documents & a carpenter on others - quite a difference.

This has all come about because a relative in Australia asked me if I could find any info on John James Miller which I have be unable to do as yet!

It might be a religious thing. I had two relatives who were Roman Catholic but the parents weren't religious and had the kids christened at the nearest church, which happened to be C of E. Many years later the kids, who had remained true to their faith, underwent adult baptisms in RC churches.
