Default Need help finding Dan Hayward

I'm looking for Dan Hayward, born c.1924 in Portsmouth. His father, also called Dan, was a policeman. I know the younger Dan was in the army, as my grandfather has a picture of him taken in 1942 in his army uniform, standing next to his father in his policeman's uniform. My grandfather is adament he survived the war, but I can't find any record of him on the IGI or army records.

    Thanks

    Hi Baggiebabe,

I have checked the birth indexes 1922-26 but couldn't find him. Is it possible Dan was his middle name? If so, what about this?

Name: Malcolm Dan Hayward Birth Date: 21 Aug 1924 Death Registration Month/Year: Oct 2002 Age at death (estimated): 78 Registration district: South East Hampshire Inferred County: Hampshire Register number: H54 Entry Number: 296

Thanks Slizzy - certainly a possibility. I only know what my grandfather has told me about him, and he knows very little himself. Is there any way to find out whether the "Dan" in the entry above was the son of another "Dan" without sending for birth certificates? Ideally I'm looking to link them to someone in my tree in Birmingham/Gloucester, but I'm having to work backwards on a line that I know next-to-nothing about!

    Thanks

    Hi Baggiebabe,

It's doubtful you could ascertain parentage without the cert.

Do you think Daniel's ancestry lies in the Birmingham/Glous. area?

Can you give details of who you are trying to link the 2 Dan's to?

    Hi Slizzy

I know that Dan is related somehow to my grandad - his grandparents were sent photos of the younger Dan when he went into the army in 1942, so I'm guessing they must be fairly closely related. From what my grandad knows, they aren't descendents of his grandfather's brothers, therefore my guess is they come from the generation before.

I have two possible ancestors, William and Charles Hayward. William was born in 1842, Charles in 1849, both in the Bishops Cleeve area of Gloucestershire. Unfortunately I haven't found any more information about either of them, so can't be sure which (if either) it is.

With so little information I'm sure this will come to a dead end, but would be good if I could tell my grandad who these guys are!

    Thanks

    Hi Katherine,

I wonder, could this be Dan the elder? His father William, wasn't born Bishop's Cleeve however, but Pebworth.

    Hi Slizzy

That could be the right Dan - all of the family up to this generation came from Gloucestershire, and I know that William's grandfather was born in Pebworth. My only concern is the age he would have been when the younger Dan was born, but then again I don't suppose it was that unusual for 40 year old men to father children.

    Thanks

My dad was called Dan Hayward, was born in 1924 and was in the army (Royal Engineers). He lived in Portsmouth from the age of about 8, but was born - I think - in West Bromwich. Unfortunately I don't know anything about his father.

There are a number of coincidences there. I wonder if they are more than that?

    Hi Polyanthus

That certainly is a large number of coincidences!! Unfortunately I haven't got any more info that would be able to ascertain a definite link. I do, however, have access to a photo of the 2 Dan Haywards - if you PM me your email address, I could scan the photo next time I visit my grandparents and send it to you and you can see if you recognise him.

Look forward to hearing from you.

    Katherine
