    Hi Helen

Have had a look but not immediately seeing anyting.

Have you already found them on the 1841 Census at least, and possibly the 1851? The family names you mention - I take it you have sighted them all in Australia after 1864? What part of AUstralia did they settle in?

I take it the couple is the same IGI couple John McDONALD who married Mary McDONALD in Feb 1841 Tyree and their first son John born 15 Jun 1841 Tyree (a week after official census night).

My one thought is: By 1841 both parents are - relative to the times - quite old at approx 40 and 30 (going by your dates). So strong likelihood either one or both of them has been previously married and widowed (and so there may be older children with them on the 1841....?)

    Cheers

    Hi

Thanks for getting back to me. The marriage that I found for John & Mary McArthur 11 March 1829 Balemartin Tyree. There was a child Catherine 13/2/1829 but she married in 1846.Also Mary born 28/3/1826 also married in1846. Then there is a gap to John 1841,then Alexander 1842, Janet 1844, Mary 1846 & Donald 1849. Mary (Mother) was found to be McArthur from Tyree marriage records. I couldnt find them in the 1841 census but did in 1851 with only the later children. Yes I agree with the age of the parents and did have thoughts that maybe the children migrated to Aussie with John (1841)as the head. Donald married in 1865 in Adelaide. Janet married in 1864 Kapunda SA. She is the only positive lead I have. I thought if there was some reference to them in the 1861 census may have narrowed the time down. Maybe I have the wrong marriage (1829)!

    Certainly an elusive family-frustration plus!

    Cheers Helen

    Hi Sherlock8

Maybe the age of Mary has been transcribed wrongly. John's occupation fits with this one in 1841.

Yes I do believe that Mary's age is a typo as in 1851 she is 40 making her b/d 1811, and in 1841 she is also 40 b/d 1801, so I think its probable that she was born 1811. There is no mention of the 2 older children in either (Catherine & Mary) however they were both married by 51 but no mention of them in 41, so maybe the marriage in 1841 could be them but marriage in 1841 does make John 41 and Mary 30. A bit old to start a new family. By the time the last child Donald was born John would have been 52. Thinking too old to migrate or died before the family did, but on Janet's marriage here in 1864, John is listed as the father. THought is if he had passed away he would not have been mentioned!-maybe

Tried to find the family, even just Janet on passenger records may have given me a hint of when they migrated and with whom

Maybe I should try and find if John snr died in Scotland

    Hi Helen,

If John died in Scotland it looks like it would have been between 1851-1855. Deaths after 1855 are on Scotlands people but not before.

So far I have been unable to find any of them on 1861 census, maybe they left between 1851-1855

John may have died between 1851 -1855 in Scotland. This is why I was hoping there may have been a census record for them, narrowing down the time period.Dont know where else to go on this one. If I cant find their arrival date here in Australia, all I have it Janets marriage in 1864. One brick wall after another, much the pity

    Thanks for your help

    Hi

The John & Mary which was found in 1861 are the right age but the children are different. I checked Janets' baptism 1844 and it states her parents were John Mc Donald and Mary Mc Donald. I also checked a marriage for John & Mary

John Mc Donald (Balemartine) married Mary Mc Donald (Mannal) 3 February 1841 Tyree

The marriage of John Mc Donald(Balemartine) & Mary McArthur (Ruag) 11 March 1829 Tyree may not be the right couple after all. I rechecked the parents of John 1841, Alexander 1842, Mary 1846, Janet, 1844 & Donald 1849 all state that Mary Mc Donald is their mother not Mary Mc Arthur as first thought.

Now I am beginning to think that John 1801 & Mary 1811 may not be the parents considering the marriage date of 1841. So thinking more in the 1820's for their births. Wrong garden path this time I think!

    Cheers Helen
