Default TRELCUT Any search advice please

    Hi

Can anyone help me as I have come to a complete dead-end? I have just started researching my family history and could do with some advice.

My great great grandparent Joseph Lockley Speed married Ellen Trelcut in Chestre on Christmas Day 1856. She was 20 years old. Her residence was Boughton in Chester. Her father Robert Trelcut was a plumber.

I did not find Ellen Trelcut on Ancestry BMD, but I did find her on the Cheshire BMD. The problem is I can find no other trace of any TRELCUT on Ancestry, the Cheshire BMD, or the IGI. The spelling on the marriage certificate is definetely TRELCUT as is Ellen's signature, however I have tried numerous variations but to no avail.

Can anyone please advise? Many thanks in advance

PS Found the family under TULCOT in the 1841 census - the 'r' and the 'e' from Trelcut was transcribed as U. Unfortunately there are no more TULCOTs either!!! Help

I don't really understand this - I looked at the record on findmypast and the surname on the marriage record is clearly Trelent. But I'm not sure there are any other Trelents either!

Many thanks for the replies: This is so interesting and so confusing!! I have the wedding certificate and she is definetely a TRELCUT both in the handwriting of the recorder of the marriage and in her own signature. But now I can see from her signature how it could have been transcribed as TRELENT.

So do you know where I can go from here? She is down in the 1861 and 1871 Census' under her married name Ellen SPEED born Liverpool 1837 and 1839 respectively, and the 1841 census as a TULCOT birth about 1837 Liverpool. Both parents are born in Liverpool too.

The marriage certificate from 1856 stated Ellen is 20yrs old - so birth about 1836. I did check Lancashire BMD but it seems records from these times have not been indexed yet.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Maybe a variant of Threlkeld? There are a few about in Liverpool. Sorry if I am being over-imaginative! (I have a Robert Tyrrell in my tree & I think he was spelled differently on every record - Tyrrell, Turrel, Thorold etc)

Gillian have checked the 1841 census where the family are TULCOTs and there is a sister Elizabeth aged 14, making her (in 1847) 20 years old. That sounds like a distinct possibility. Is sending for the marriage certicate the best way forward - I am assuming it will have address and father's name and occupation?

I have done soundex variations and threlkelds have come up - maybe I should look at these closer.

We have Halliwells or Holliwells in our family - I have found 10 different ways of it being spelt! Made that an interesting search but at least they were all sounding about the same and I could see some logic in the diffeerent spelling. However Tulcot, Trelcot and Trelent and all its possible variations seems like it could be an openended search.

Thanks for finding Elizabeth - I just hadn't thought of looking for her - too fixated on Ellen. All part of the learning process!

On 1841 the parents and daughter Elizabeth are born out of county. If any of them could be found on a later census it would give a place of birth which would be a big help
