Thread: Transported convicts

Some research on Ancestry suggests that my ancestor's first husband, Samuel Smoothy, was transported to Tasmania (VDL). How do I go about finding out more about why he was transported and what happened to him next?



Annoyingly I was only in Port Arthur a few months ago - if only I had known then!

Not sure where he came from, but before he was convicted he was in Earls Colne, Essex.

A Samuel SMOOTHY convict did arrive in Tassie in 1848..... he had departed London 13 Mar 1848, on ship Anna Maria (1) and arrived in Hobart 7 Jun same year.

Further to that. Records state he was born in 1818 and he died in 1881 in Launceston Tasmania. Name on those records is spelt Smoothey.

Does anyone have access to census records for Tasmania? I'd love to know whether he re-married or had any children after he had served his sentence.

That would have come up when I did the name search for him. So it does not appear as if he remarried after he arrived. Convicts had to apply for permission to marry and he does not appear on that list up to 1857.



There is only one other Smoothy that is coming up on the records. John Smoothy married Harriett Miskillion in 1836 in Hobart and had a son Martin in 1837. John arrived on the Medway 13 March 1821.
