Thread: London lighterman records

I am wondering if anyone knows how i can get a hold of any records of lighterman in London?

My great grandfather and a few others in the family were lighterman/waterman. I understand because they did an apprenticeship, there are records somewhere containing all their details.

I am not from the UK, so cannot go to a search room.

Am i able to look at any online (without paying a fortune)?

Or has someone possible got access to these records?

Hi Kate - no apprenticeship records online for that date I'm fairly sure.

I think the records are held in the Guildhall Library in London

i had already had a look at Parish register, and came up with nothing. I understand now, (thankyou) that they're at the library. But i am from Australia. Is there anyway i can get a hold of these records???? Anyone know???

I have just seen there are some watermen & lightermen records at the SoG library (see my thread on Offer Help board). I won't have time on my next visit but could look the time after if you let me have all the details you have.

Failing that I am going on a (guided) visit to the Guildhall Library in September but that is a long time to wait!

I have found a copy of the Company of Watermen & Lightermen Reassignmen Index 1688-1908 (ie when an apprentice was reassigned to a new master or mistress). I am copying all Hilliard references for you.
