I have been unable to find my great great grandfather in the 1871 Census: name Joseph Lockley Speed B 1838 Chester. His wife (Ellen Speed nee Trelcut born 1839 Liverpool) and children (George 11, Albert 6, Robert 4, Lucy 2, Elizabeth and Ellen 3m) are in the census as living in Barracks at Western Heights, Dover. Although interestingly Ellen is listed seperately from the children and the children's mother is listed and Elizabeth!



There is no trace of the family at all in the 1881 census.



In 1891 Joseph reappears living in Chester. There is no trace of Ellen Speed and I have been unable to find a registration of her death.



Can I assume that Joseph was serving abroad in 1871 and if so where would I find more information?

Can I also assume that in 1881 the whole family were abroad and again where could I find out more information?

If Ellen died when they were living abroad (if this was the case) where could I find information about her death?



Any information/advice would be gratefully received.
