Thread: Hannah Speed born 1870 Chester Died when and where?

I was wondering if you could help me? I am new to researching my family history and I am a little stuck.

I believe my great grandmother Hannah Lydia Speed nee Holliwell (born Mar 1870 Chester) is buried in a cemetery in Tipton. We think she died around 1920. Details are all pretty vague. We know that when she died she was living on a canal boat. It is said that her body was transported down the canal before she was buried. Unfortunately I have been able to find a registration of her death and wondered where I can go from here?

PS I thought I found her death registered in Chester but when the certificate came it turned out to be her sister in law!

There are 2 Hannah Speeds at around the same time - I'm not sure which one was the sister in law but am assuming the earlier one

That's the sister-in-law. I only realised when the birth certificate arrived. At first I thought Hannah had married her brother -in-law (Albert Speed) but when I checked the census' he was married to a Hannah and had children with her at the same time as my great grandmother was married to her husband Robert - so just a co-incidence. Did you say there is another Hannah Speed you have found? My grandmother said she is buried in Tipton in the West Midlands but I was unable to find anything from any of my searches here either.

I think this is Hannah Speed born Cheadley Lodge, Cheshire 1866. I have the birth certificate for my Hannah and its 1870 so she would have been 54yrs in 1924 - possibly too big a gap in years?

My grandmother told us of 'her great shame' on her deathbed - this was having lived on a barge after her father died and her mother Hannah 'took up' with a 'bargee'. This was apparently how they travelled down to the Midlands where my grandmother settled. She said her mother never married this man.

Before my grandmother died, and she told us of this 'shame', she had told me her mother was buried in a cemetery in Tipton. As her mother's dead body was carried on a barge (another source of shame) I suppose she could have died anywhere on route from Chester?

I have contacted the local library in Tipton to see if they have graveyard transcripts - this may give me another lead?

The death may never have been registered but I will look through the 1930s later (double checking - I am sure you have done this already)

There is a transcript of monumental inscriptions in Tipton St Martins - I'll see if I can track it down - don't know how comprehensive it is though
