    Default Watton

    Hi all,

I am researching the Watton family from the Birmingham, Warwickshire area. In particular, there are two Albert Watton's born in Birmingham in 1884. One was the son of Edwin Francis and Eliza Watton. Can anyone find the parents of the other Albert Watton?

    Thanks from Pat in Toronto

    Thanks Gillian,

Perhaps there was some connection between the two families back in time. I appreciate your look-up and for separating the two Albert Watton's.

    Kind regards

Thanks to everyone for your warm welcome and all your help. I now need more help with my Watton family.

Edwin Watton, Upholsterer, married Eliza Cox in 1837 in Birmingham. They had a son Edwin Francis Watton in 1839.

On their marriage certificate both Edwin and Eliza Watton are entered as being "of full age." In the 1841 census Eliza Watton is listed as being 30 years old and Edwin is 20.

In the 1851 census Eliza Watton is listed together with her son Edwin Francis but husband Edwin is missing. One of her visitors is Charles Dobson who is also an upholsterer.

I cannot find a death for Edwin Watton between 1841 and 1851. I did send for the death certificate of an Edwin Walton in 1849 but he wasn't the right one. Despite an intense search I am unable to track Edwin down in 1851. There is however a death for Edwin Watton in 1855 in Birmingham. In 1861 Eliza is listed as a widow.

Can anyone find Edwin Watton in the 1851 census?

    Many thanks for your help.

    Hi Pat,

Can I ask for clarification on Edwin's occupation? As on the 1841 census he's recorded as a paper hanger (if I've found the right Edwin).

    Hi Slizzy,

Yes you are right that in the 1841 census, Edwin is a paper hanger but on his marriage certificate he is an upholsterer. He is also an upholsterer on his son Edwin Francis Watton's birth certificate in 1839 as well as his son's marriage certificate in 1862.

This Edwin is really giving me a hard time as he just disappeared. I have never been able to find the Eliza Watton age 21 born in London who is listed as Eliza's sister? in 1851 either.

Incidently, Charles Dobson who is visiting Eliza in 1851 also seems to wander from one county to the other throughout the years. I don't know whether this was part of the job as an upholsterer.

Charles Dobson was also the witness at the marriage of Edwin Francis Watton in 1862.

    Thanks for your help Slizzy

    Pat
