try to find out who my great grandfather John Fredrick Giles b1866 d1949 who did he marry before he married Emma lillian White nee Sargant in 1916 a cousin cant help me with this and i have looked everywhere

i am now sitting looking at my great grandfathers birth cirtifacat he was in the district of Edmonton in the county of Middlesex and his 2nd marrage tock place in West Ham mind you i had to laugh to find that my grandfather was born before john and emma got married

Hi,

Have you looked on the 1901 census. Was he married then? What area are we talking about? Have you looked at Parish Records as well as the National Index?

You have the wrong year for his marriage to Emma L White. According to FreeBMD it was in 1915 in West Ham Reg Dist. Unless you made a typo I can only presume that you have not got the marriage cert. If that is so, how do you know for absolute sure that he married twice? It will say on the cert whether he was a widow or single.



There is another marriage on FreeBMD in 1914 for a John F Giles to a Margaret M Smith Lewisham Reg Dist.

Hi again,

Nothing really unusual in an illegitimacy. It is a well known fact amongst family researchers that prior to about 1920 30percent of first children were born before their parents married, or very quickly after. As you go back in your tree you will probably find a lot more.
