Thread: Catherine Duff ~ Paisley Scotland

Hi



Trying to find the parents of Catherine Duff Born Abt 1826 Paisley Renfewshire Scotland.

Catherine married John McLean not sure when, Had a son Archibald McLean born Abt 1853 Paisley Renfewshire Scotland.

Can't see the actual page, but on Ancestry, the 1841 is coming up



91 High St, Paisley Middle, Renfrewshire



Widow Duff, (60, b Ireland), Rosann, (25, b Ireland, thread factory), John, (20, b Ireland), Catherine, (15, b Renfrewshire, thread factory).



Looked in the 1861 (Scotland) but can't see an Archibald McLean (b about 1853, Renfrewshire) with father John and mother Catherine. Although there was one with father Archibald, but the mother Catherine wasn't from Paisley.

You may already have these Census.....in summary:



John and Catherer (sic) McLEAN are in Paisley in 1851. She is stated to be 26 and born Paisley. Son Archibald is 1. The other children are: John 5 and Alexander 2. Address is 9 School Wynd.



John and Catherine McLEAN are in Paisley in 1861. She is stated to be 35 and born Paisley, Son Archibald is listed as 11. There are other children:

John 15, Alexander 12, Esther 4, Daniel 4 mths. Address is given as 9, but iin full it is undoubtedly, 9 School Wynd



John and Cath McLEAN are in Paisley in 1871. She is stated to be 45 and born Paisley. Son Archibald has been transcribed as Clarks age 21. Other children are Alexander 23, Esther 14 and Donnel 10 (sic, ie: Daniel)

Address is 9 School Wynd.



IGI: shows 3 other children, all of whom may have died young - certainley the first Catherine probably did:

Catherine 1858

Catherine 1862

Barbara 1865



This would all put the marriage between John and Catherine to be sometime preceding the birth of son John in Nov 1845 - possibly not long before this date.

Esther 1856 (she also has entry on LDS Pedigree Resource File; married McALLISTER)

Catherine 1858

Daniel 1860

Catherine 1862

Barbara 1865



Archibald is not on the IGI born to John McLEAN and Catherine DUFF.

But - there is this:

Archibald McLEAN born 20 Mar 1850 Paisley to parents named John McLEAN and Catherine McFEE. There is also a Lachlan McLEAN born 1852 and Dugald McLEAN 1854 born Paisley to the same named parents.



In Census 1891 there is the following:

Burgh Workhouse, New Sneddon, Paisley, Renfrewshire

Pauper Inmate: Catherine McPhee Duff McLEAN 65. Housewife, b Paisley



All these Census are transcripted sources - so the originals would need to be consulted to be absolutely sure of what they say.



If your Catherine died in Scotland, between 1891 and 1901, hopefully her death certificate may confirm the names of her parents.....



SP does have:

Catherine McLEAN - other name McPHEE died Paisley 1897 age 70 (born abt 1827)

Hi Kiwi,



I haven't had any luck with Catherine's birth under MCFEE or Duff. The marriage of her parents may have taken place in Ireland.

At least one of the children on a later census maynot actually be the child of John and Catherine. I will see if I can sort this out, and will get back to you.
