    Default Smart children

    Hi folks

I'm trying to trace some Smart children.

1841 census shows parents Edward 65, Mary 60,

    Isle of Wight, Hampshire,

and appear to have grandchildren living with them,

or were they setting records then!

Any ideas of how to trace the missing generation

    would be appreciated

    many thanks Dave13

    Hi Dave

How about these? (from the IGI)

Elizabeth Smart christening 3 April 1814 St Mary Cowes Hampshire

Edward Smart christening 17 Mar 1816 St Mary Cowes Hampshire

Richard Smart christening 18 Jan 1818 St Mary Cowes Hampshire

    Parents Edward & Mary

Looks like they are Elizabeth's children -

    1851 Census

    Edward Smart 75 mariner

    Elizabeth 35 washerwoman

    Ann 13

    George 10

    Edward 8

All born West Cowes Isle of Wight

    hi Gillian

Thanks for the info, I think they are the ones I'm after.

Seems like Mary died between '41 and '51.

OK, now the confusing bit of who's who.....

Any record of Elizabeth (3 children) husband,

    either Edward or Richard Smart,

    and

Charlotte Smart, 15 on '41 census,

sister or daughter or wife to be.

hope you can understand what I mean

    Many thanks for your help

    Dave

Sorry Dave - sloppy posting on my part! Elizabeth was the daughter and unmarried. Will look for Charlotte later.

I think George Butcher - 1851 Census Surrey Lambeth

    George Butcher 26 bricklayer

    Charlotte 28 dressmaker

    George 7

    Arthur 3

    Ann 1

All born Cowes Isle of Wight except Ann born Surrey Lambeth

    hi Gillian

    Thanks for latest info

marriage of George and Charlotte seems to fit,

apart from Charlotte age, 15 on '41, 28 on '51.

I'm hoping I've got the right one, could she be a younger sister

    orRichard or Edward her father.

Whats the best way to trace George and Charlotte back.

I hope I'm not taking up too much of your time........

    2 questions

on census print-out it states ED. institution, or vessel followed by number, does the number relate to all the people livingin the house

and how long do these postings stay on the site

    Many thanks again Dave

Hi Dave - although 1841 doesn't state relationships it is by far the most likely that she is a daughter - she is too old to be a grandchild. 1841 rounds down ages 15 and over to the nearest 5 years so she could for example be 19 and still recorded as 15 so there isn't necessarily any discrepancy between 1841 and 1851.

Tracing back further on your family will not be easy but best to start with the IGI - ask for help if necessary but it is more fun to find them for yourself. Also Starlight has a Hampshire marriage thread on Help Offered board.

No problem about my time - I enjoy doing look ups.

A census reference consists of 3 numbers - the RG number identifies the particular census - next the piece number (collection of many individual enumerators books for a district) - last the folio number (a particular sheet - front & back)

Re postings you'd have to ask Jon but as far as I know they have all remained on site so far (see archive button at top of the page) - anyway you don't need to worry that they will suddenly disappear

    hi Gillian

    Thanks for latest reply.

At the moment I've only limited access to various sites regarding information able to view, but where family members have same names, or even other family members, but no address, I think, I think, but not sure, by comparing the source citation, etc, I can maybe check that they are family members in the same house on the relative census.

    Possible? What do you think?

Thanks again for all your help

    Dave
