    Default A birth certificate information

I currently have been given a baptism of my husbands grandfather and ive been trying to find his birth certificate for quite sometime now. here is the info i have:

King Albert baptised 22/9/1901 parents Mark and Betsy Light, Hop picking in Binstead,Alton. Tradesman.

In the side margin it says, Birth August 30th (Although we thought his birthdate was: 9/8/1901.

I have just found a Albert Edward Light ......... Portsmouth birth quaters April May June.

They went down as Lights and Crutchers, i have searched as Crutcher for Albert but found nothing. But my question is how can i find out if this is the right birth certificate i need without buying it first, or will i have too a take pot luck its the right one. Any help i would be greatful Thankyou. Tina

    Hi Tina,

Actually, you can specify 'checking points' when ordering certificates from the GRO - e.g., father's name, mother's name, and/or date of birth*. If the certificate you've specified doesn't match the checking point(s), they won't send you the cert. There are a couple of drawbacks, however:

    1) The GRO will still charge an administration fee of £4.50 (it used to be £4) even if the checking points don't match. Assuming that you order online and provide the reference (i.e., Volume/Page/District), you'll only get a £2.50 refund from your £7 and still have no cert.

    2) I'm told that GRO can be very picky about the checking points matching exactly. For example, if you specified that the mother's name had to be Betsy, they would not accept alternate forms such as Elizabeth, Eliza, or Betty. Providing too many checking points increases the chance that the correct certificate might be screened out by mistake.

You might have better luck with the local Register Office - e.g., they might check details for you before cashing your check. It may be worth calling or e-mailing them first to see what their policy is.

The registration for Albert Edward LIGHT (AMJ 1901) is too early for your chap, whether he was born on August 9 or August 30. What do you think about either:

Alfred Edward LIGHT - JAS 1901 - Vol. 2c, Page 40 Southampton Reg. Dist. or

Albert George LIGHT - OND 1901 - Vol. 2b, Page 507 Portsmouth Reg. Dist.

Hope this is of some help,

    Tim

    * Note that checking points should be entered in the 'Reference Checking' page, not in the 'Particulars of the person whose certificate is required' box

Thankyou Slizzy. The first one Walter Mark Crutcher is a different family. The second one is the right one i do have his birth certificate.

I just cant understand why i cant find his birth, I can find Alberts brothers and sister (appart from Mark Crutcher his brother), he would be (or ussumed) Albert Edward Crutcher b) 9/8/1901, family say isle of wight, new forest or dorset for his place of birth i have searched these but have come up with nothing.
