    Default CARR

I have spent a long time researching various branches of my family tree most of which are Scottish. Both Scotlands People and Ancestryaid have been an invaluable help in finding us Scots.

I am now turning to the part which originated in England and I'm not sure where is the best place or site to start looking.

The only information I have is what has been given to me by relatives.

John Carr born in Newham 1899 - died Innerleithen (Scotland) 1970

John's wife was Agnes Hunter born 1906 - died 1996 Kelso (Scotland)

His Father was also John Carr born 1864 died in Ellingham 1929

His Mother was Helen ?? born in 1866 Died in Newham 1947

    Hi Silverfox,

ancestry is still of value to you... you can search the BMD indexes for birth's, marriages and deaths... but unlike Scotland's People you don't get to view the entries in the registers... The only thing you have is the year, quarter of registration, district, volume no and page no...

Ancestry can be used for the 1841 -1901 Census...

    You can also use

    FreeBMD

    FreeCen

    Hi Raven,

Yes it could well be him. The dates certainly tie up. You must have been using that "Genealogy Wizzardry" that I've accused Starlight of. I tried the Free BMD thingy and couldn't make head nor tail of it. I've been lulled ito a false sense of "jings this is easy" sort of thing with Scotlandspeople.............................just type in the names and dates and the information comes pouring out the bottom of the computer

I'm going to let one of the family "elders" have a look at the names of the other children to see if they recognise them as being correct and I'll get back to you.

Presumably it was from a cencus, but where?

You mentioned being able to access cencus information on ancestry but I couldn't see where? (unless I'm going blind)

Another question, how do you trace back generations in England. In other words on scotlandspeople a marriage certificate shows who the mother and father are so you know who to start looking for next. Is this information available on BMDs for England?

    regards,

    Silver

    Hi Silver,

I used the UK Census records from the home page of Ancestry.co.uk

Click on the 1901 England Census.. In the search boxes... enter First Name and Surname.. I entered Northumberland as the County.. I then put in his year of birth +/- 2 years.. Place of birth... and clicked on search.. You can view the transcription or the original image with the English and Welsh Census on Ancestry.

On English marriage certs you are only given the father's name and occupation. We in Scotland have been spolied, I am afraid... Only way to get the mother's maiden name is through birth certs... which are £7 each to order online through GRO

I will have a look on the BMD's for the births of Winnie and her brothers for you... If you need any further help please feel free to ask..
