I’m writing this before checking out all the new changes to the Site so can’t comment on them but I feel sure they will be first class, as always. Thank you.
I’m totally stuck and looking for advice please. What do you do when you know someone should be in the various census returns but you just can’t find them?
The couple I’m after are:
William THORN(ES) ch.26 March 1797 Bedale, Yks. and his wife Ann CAGGILL (CAYGILL/KAYGILL) ch.6 July 1800 Kirklington, Yks. In 1841 and 1851.
They were married 24th February 1823 Burneston, Yks.
Known children:
Matthew THORNES ch.15 May 1825 St.Peter, Leeds
William THORNES ch.16 Sep 1827 Ditto
George THORNES ch.16 May 1830 Ditto
Joseph THORNES 1834
Matthew and William I have on 1841 census both at their place of work. George and Joseph are with their grandparents, Matthew and Ann in 1841.
At the marriage of Matthew THORNES (ch.1825) to Emma DEAN on 8 March 1849, Matthew’s father William is alive and shown as a Shopkeeper, so he must have been around in 1841, and possibly still in 1851.
The options I have tried are THOMAS, THOR*, THO* as well as all the THORN variants. I have found that Thomas and Thornes is very easily confused.
They might have had other children but, if so, I haven't found them. Certainly they were rid of the children at an early age. The two eldest were out working at 14 and 15, and the younger ones are only 7 and 11 when they are living with their grandparents.
Any suggestions would be appreciated thanks.
OzzieJoan
