Thread: Swedish Records/Licensing Records

Does anyone know how to go about getting info regarding Swedish seamen, or what records there are available relating to a birth in Sweden if you have no knowledge of the place of birth?

Did Beer Sellers/Publicans have to have a licence during the latter 1800s?

ABRAM (ABRAHAM) CARLSON (CHARLSON)

On his wedding cert 1862 in Stepney, at age 29, Abram Charlson states that his father is John Charlson, Carpenter. Abram is a ship's carpenter.

We think the Charlson is from his Scandinavian accent, as the family appear in censuses as both Carlson and Charlson.

We don't know whether he was with the Swedish Navy or with the British Fleet.

As they got married in early 62, we have to assume he was in the Uk prior to the 61 census, but assume he was at sea at that time as we can't find him.

In 71 census he is missing, presumably at sea, because Maria says she is a seaman's wife.

In 1881 he is a Beer retailer in Tower Hamlets and says he was born in Sweedon.

He dies in 1885.



Where do we begin to look for his birth and subsequently his Swedish family?

What details are given on a liquor licence?



Any ideas would be gratefully accepted.

Search National Archives site for seamens services -NB his name may have originally been Carlsson

Search historicaldirectories for an entry

Google Welsh Ancestry pub workers for useful general guide on publican ancestors
