I am trying to find out as much as I can about Alexander Boyd Aitken (Father John Aitken) who was born in Newtongrange (Parish of Newbattle) Date unknown.



All I have to go on are his wife



Georgina Haig Smith born Newbattle 1913



Daughters

Constance born Newbattle date unknown?

Do you mean that Alexander was born in Newbattle or his father John ? The only Alexander I can find born there around the correct time was in 1903 but with a father Thomas.

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you Starlight.



It helps if you have the right birth year and parish to begin with.

I had to phone my uncle in London to ask him when and where his father

You have now given me the birth and death of Alexander . Is it his parents that you are now after .

Now that I have the correct DOB I have now been able to locate his birth certificate on Scotlands People which gives his parents as John Black Aitken and Jane Laing who were married in Currie 25th December 1891



Plus his Death Certificate which states his wife as Georgina Smith. Brother who signed the death certificate as James.



My uncle John (his son said he had two sisters Margaret and Mary and two brothers James & William)



He also said he thinks his Grandfather John Black Aitken came from Lanarkshire.

Interestingly John Black Aitken was a papermaker as was my father, his father and his father before him. I always thought my mothers family came from a long line of coalminers. Alexander worked at the Lady Victoria Coalmine in Newtongrange, the first large deep mine in Britain - Now a museum)
