    Default How do I find

Can anyone tell me how I can find the details of a birth at sea? My paternal GtGrandmother Maria Louisa White was apparently born on the Mediterranean sea abt 1873. Any help would be apreciated thanks.

    Hi Grandmacarol,

Births, Marriages, and Deaths at Sea

Registration of Births, Marriages and Deaths at sea were recorded from July 1837, and should be looked for in the Marine Registers of the General Register Office. Registers of deaths of emigrants at sea from 1847 to 1869 can be found in Colonial Office records CO 386/169-172.

I am not sure if they are on Findmypast or not but maybe someone with access to this site may be able to help

    Hi carol

Searched thro Births at Sea 1865 -1883 with no luck. there were a few unmaned female "Whites". One was born 27/6/74 to Jacob & Caroline White on the "Erin". I did find on FreeBDM a Maria Louise White registered in Q3 1871 in Marylabone

Thanks David I think the one with the parents called Jacob and Caroline are the ones as there was talk in the family that Maria Louisa was going to be called after the Ship she was born on but then they decided against it. Maria Louisa was born abt 1873 and I assume you meant 1874 on your msg not 1974! so thats a possibility. Please can you give me a link to the information you found as I have no idea where to look. Thanks once again.

    Hi Carol

I found the entry on www.Findmypast.com in the Births at Sea. which is a digital archive of Registrar General for Shipping and Seamen. The original registers are at The National Archives in Series BT158. The entry is in the group 1872 -1883. On page 47 Folio number 568. The entry reads as follows:

Name of Parents: Jacob + Caroline White

    Date of Birth: 27.6.74

    Sex of Child: F

    Christain Name: -

Name of Ship and official number: Erin 50274

Date of Receipt of List: 21.7.74

Also in the General Register Office (GRO) Marine Births Indices 1862-1875 there is a White (female) listed with reference page 437 (no other information in this index).

I hope this is of use

    David
