Thread: Born 1906, Sent to Australia -

but where do I look? Story goes, he was a 'bad' boy and sent to Australia. No one in the family (apparently) kept in touch with him. I know he was born Q1 1906 and registered at Brentford. Anyone have any advice on this search please?

He wouldn't have been 'sent' to Australia as transportation ended in the 1860's.

when I say 'sent', I don't necessarily mean sent-by-the-authorities-as-punishment. My Mother (he was her GtUncle) seems to remember being told 'he was a naughty boy so they (whoever they were!!) sent him to Australia. Do you know if there was oh, I dunno, maybe a program to send youngsters to the Colonies - Oz, Canada etc between 1906 and maybe 1930?

Are you sure he wasn't sent to Coventry?

A name might help as if he was sent to New South Wales some information might be found in Marriage and Death Records.



The only scheme I know about with English children being sent to Australia was during WWII.

Thanks for your message. The ancestors name was:



Albert Edward Barrett, b. Q1 1906, and it was registered at Brentford, Middlesex.



I know his Father was killed during WWI, and possibly as he had siblings his mother couldn't manage without a husband. All supposition sadly, and there isn't anyone from his generation left alive I can ask!!

I have found 2 deaths for an Albert Edward Barrett. One in 1956 and the other in 1962.

A possible marriage for Albert Edward.

I found 2 other marriages for an Albert Edward, one in 1944 and one in 1951 but I think the one from 1926 is most likely.



Unfortunately if he was sent out very young he may have been put up for adoption and his name changed and that will be very hard to trace.



If either of these deaths looks like belonging to you I will give you information on how to obtain certificates with the names and contacts for transcription agents. A transcription agent here is usually half the price of the Registrar of BDM and you get more information. But you would have to contact them for prices to the UK.

Sadly neither of these entries seem relevant - his parents were: Frederick Barrett and Rosina nee Newell.



As you suggested, had he been adopted then highly likely I'll never find him. When I discovered he'd been 'sent away', I thought I'd found some colour to my boring family! I've looked for Murderers, Transported Convicts, all kinds of wrong-doers and NOTHING!! THAT'S disappointing...
