    Hi jackboc,

I wish I knew the answer to that one myself.

You can open other trees but as your one will probably be the old discontinued version make sure you keep that one where it is especially if it is a private tree. As long as you have one tree there you can have others also but once you remove the last one you will have to put your tree on the new version with personal or public trees.

If you have a large tree I would not recommend that you upload another tree from the gedcom and remove the names you don't want. I tried that way but have given up.

At the moment I am doing the part I want repeated by hand. Reading the info from Ancestry to do this is too slow. If you decide to do it this way let me know and I'll let you know a quicker way of reading the information.

I hope someone comes up with a simple idea though as I could do with it as well.

    Thankyou for that info

I should add that as yet the tree is not on the AFT site, but i do have a smaller file / tree on Genesunited.

The main one being on my home PC [with 1365 individuals], i got a bit carried away when researching my sister in laws tree and now want to create and send her the ged file via email..

There is a help section named 'pruning' but however many times i read it, i dont understand how to do it.[it sounds easy til i actually give it a go ] and am scared i'll lose everything as this program itself plays up now and again.ie i get a error window when i back up, and if i enter place name beginning with C, the program locks up and i have to restart it.Yes, i do beleive it is a discontinued version as a couple of years ago i had hell and all trouble finding the original exe file... I've just purchased the Who Do You Think You Are Family Tree Maker from Ebay, it looks good but as far as i can see its not possible to import a ged

this is the pruning help from AFT:

There are several reasons why you might want to prune a branch from your family tree. These include:

You want to split your database. Make a copy of your database, then prune some branches from one copy, and prune other branches from the other copy.

You have imported data with branches you are not interested in, and want to remove these unwanted branches.

You are about to receive an updated copy of a branch from a relative or other source, and want to first prune out your old, out-dated copy of the branch so you can do a clean graft with no (or minimal) merging.

    How to do it:

    1. Backup your database to either your hard disk or a floppy and record where it is in case you make a mistake and need to do a restore.

    2. Enter the Search for Individual window by using Ctrl-B, selecting Search in the Tools menu, or clicking on the Search button of the toolbar (looks like a rolodex).

    3. Make sure the Advanced features are displayed. Click ADVANCED>> if they are not.

    4. If the counts show anything but zeroes, clear them by clicking both CLEAR buttons (one under Relationship Filter and one under Field Filter).

    5. Select the root person of the branch. For example, if you want to remove all of grandpa Jones' descendants, or all of his ancestors, make sure that grandpa Jones is highlighted in the list box, and his information is shown on the right half of the screen.

    6. Set the Relationship type under Relationship Filter to All Ancestral Related for an ancestral branch, or to All Descendant Related for a descendant branch.

    7. Click SELECT.

If you have selected All Ancestral Related, AFT will select the person, the parents of the highlighted person, all of the ancestors of these parents, and all spouses, children, parents of spouses, etc. EVERYONE related (linked in any way) to the parents of the individual except the spouse(s) and descendants of the highlighted person will be selected.

If you have selected All Descendant Related, AFT will select the highlighted person, spouse(s) and ALL descendants of the person and EVERYONE related (linked in any way) to the descendants, except for the ancestors of the highlighted person and his/her spouse(s).

If you have cousin intermarrying in your database, you may need to check the selected individuals carefully to insure that you only selected those whom you intended to select. Intermarrying between individuals in the branch you are selecting and other branches will cause this procedure to select everyone related to the individual in any way.

    8. Review the selections made to make sure you have selected exactly who you intended. Make adjustments if necessary by selecting other individuals or sets of individuals, or by deselecting individuals or sets of individuals.

For a quick verification, you may want to check the Relationship Counts under Filtered List; see if the number of selected individuals looks right.

Also, you may want to check the "Show results only" box and scroll through the list.

    9. If you are not sure that the set is accurate, you can do a few extra steps to make sure:

    a. Export this set of people to a GEDCOM file.

    b. Create a new, temporary database.

    c. Import this GEDCOM file into the new database.

    d. Examine the new database to make sure it looks like you've selected the right people. Do any reporting, browsing, navigating the pedigree chart, etc., that you need to do to make sure.

    e. When you are finished with the temporary database, close it, then delete it.

    f. Once you are sure you understand this process, complete the process by executing step 10.

Also, see Verifying Your GEDCOM File

    10. When you are sure that you have the correct set of people selected, click DELETE to prune this branch. This will delete everyone selected.

    11. If you make a mistake and delete people you shouldn't have, restore the backup you made in step 1.

Hi again Starlight, its on the 'help about - index' section.

I think the way to go is to try and send the original file to cd, then have another go.If that doesnt work, it looks like i'll have to re-enter the data the long way [name by name]
