    Default Searching for George Marshall

    Hi everyone/anyone

I am searching for details with regard to George Marshall, who was transported to Tasmania on the Blenheim on 23rd March 1850. He was due for a seven year stretch, but I cannot see evidence of his return to England in 1857. Would anyone have access to Australian death records, and be able to tell me whether he died out there, or whether maybe he remarried. His wife is declaring herself widowed in the 1851 census, so death is a possibility.

    Thanks

    Hi Pat

    http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=2

A convict of that name did leave Tasmania in Jun 1857, travelling steerage and heading for Melbourne. He was listed as age 36 - so born abt 1821.

    Could this be you man?

TO find him in possible Aussie records, it may help if you could provide:

His date and place of birth

    His parents names

    His siblings names

    Kind regards

When convicts were transported it was very uncommon for them to return to England when their sentence was up and often it was a condition that they didn't. It was also normal for marriages to basically be annulled if the spouse did not want to come to Australia with them or to join them. The government encouraged this to happen as they were trying to populate a new colony and there were not a lot of women. Wives were not discouraged from coming here with any children they already had. If the wives did not want to come the convict could then re-marry.

    Hi Annie

Thanks for that info, although I am not sure we are talking the same man, because I think my George would have been 43/44 in 1857. However, he would have served his 7 years in 1857, as he was sentenced in 1849/50. We think he was born in Headley Hampshire, England, in 1812/1813, to John and Ann(e) Marshall. His siblings would have included Sarah (1805), Elizabeth (1808) Harriet (1816) Sophia (1821), and possibly others. His wife was Charlotte Aldred who he married in 1835. At the time of transportation, he had 4 children..Mary, Samuel, Harriet, and George. Does this info help?

    Thanks for your interest

Thank you for that info, we rather suspected that our George never returned, as his wife in England did remarry, albeit some years later. We are still trying to trace what happened to George in Tasmania, whether he lived out his years there, or maybe moved on eventually. We have found one burial site in Tasmania, with dates that tie in, but there is no concrete information yet.

Again many thanks for your info
