    Default Hon Charles Walter Lindsay

I wonder if anyone can help me? I am trying to find out who my ancestors were. My Grandfather's name was as above. He was a remittance man in New Zealand. He was a Lieutenant Colonel in (I think The Queens Guard) He was court marshalled and is in the Harts Army Lists for 1888 as retired by sale or commutation. I have no idea where to go next. Apparently his Father was also Military. We have always wondered where our roots were. We have our Fathers version of the event and know that afterwards he Joined The East India Company as a regular soldier and served there for about 20 years before he came to NZ. My Grandmother was his second wife and I have been unable to find out who his first wife was, or whether he had any issue from that marriage.

    Hi Kiwi,

No I am hoping my Brother will give me my Fathers Death Certificate. I have been waiting for it for a long time. I do know that he was in his 60's when WW2 broke out because Dad told me he tried to enlist. My Father was born in 1914 and he had an elder brother who was killed in Greece WW2. I know he had previously been married (he wasn't married to my Grandmother. I also understand that he had family with his 1st wife. From what I have found, I am picking he was born in the late 1850's-60's. I think he may have arrived in Auckland from London in about 1907. I know Dad was horrified to find his parents weren't married, so has probably destroyed any paper work. My young Brother was executor and has held on to everything. We only got a share of the family home and my older Brother got his medals and citations. That is everything I know at this stage. It looks as though I will have to buy a copy of his birth certificate which should list GF's details. Mary

I to am searching for a Charles Walter Lindsay c 1851 place unknown, (his father also a Charles Walter Lindsay according to son's marriage certificate) I presume he came to New Zealand with at least his 2 daughters who were both born in Shoreditch, London in 1886 & 1887. I believe i have found his death in Auckland in 1931, he was a bootmaker. His daughter Caroline Alice Lindsay was my husbands Grandmother. She married George William Cook in New Zealand in 1915 and died in 1933. Any information would be great.

I believe that I am the older brother of Mary - the original poster on this subject. Charles Walter was definately a bootmaker so we are talking about the same man. His second wife is listed on his son's War Graves Commission detail as being buried at Suba Bay on Crete as being Ellen Lindsay, although I know that they were not married. This can be viewed at the following URL:
    [/COLOR]]The War Graves Photographic Project
There were 5 children resulting from his union with Ellen - names as follows: William (buried on Crete) Hector (my father) James, Bert (I don't know what that is short for) and Doreen.

I have searched extensively and am thinking that he was one of two illegimate children of Lord Lindsay who are not named on records.

I believe that at some stage Charles Walter Lindsay, after his military service, was employed by the East India Company and was on the books as a bootmaker but in reality was serving in their unofficial "army".

Drewgirl 62 - it sure looks like we are related. Have you found out anything further since your last post ?
    What about you Mary?
