Thread: look up needed please

my first posting on here so hi to everyone,

wondering if anyone could do a look up for me please i need to find some peices of the puzzel

my ancestors name castellain, came from italy the only thing i know is a mathew castellain b naples 1844 he married ? and had six girls but what puzzels me is that my ggrandmother was not listed as one of them her name was ellen castellain and was wondering if mathew came to liverpool as a child with his family so ellen may be his neice or did he come here as an adult and was his wife also italian or did he meet her in liverpool?

would be most gratefull if anybody could solve this mystery for me

Would this be the Ellen Castellain that married Martin Grimes in 1883 ?

And the Mathew Castellain who was a blacksmith in 1881 ?

Some more info would be helpful - when was your ggrandmother Ellen born?



As Jim says, Matthew (b Naples) was a blacksmith. The 1891 has this family at 1 (in?) 40 Hornby St, Lpool

Matthew Cast(ellion), 62, blacksmith/labourer, b Naples

Mary, wife, 50, b Lpool, Isabella, 14, Cristina, 12 and James, 8, all b Lpool



Matthew may have died 1902, age 61(?), but can't see him in 1901



Other Matthews I can see are:-

1) b 1907 West Derby, d 1908

2) b 1919 (mothers maiden name Sweeney)



The 1881 at 40 Thurlow St, Lpool has an Ellen Castellain, 15, servant

As Jim says, she may have married Martin Grimes at a Reg Office, Lpool in 1883.



The only other Ellen I can see is born 1910 in West Derby, but it looks like she died 1911.



There was another Castellain family in Liverpool in 1861-1881, with a daughter Eliane (b1869, West Derby). They moved to Suffolk before the 1891 census.



Incidently, it looks like we share a surname. If you are from Liverpool we may be related. PM me if you like.

The same family are in the 1881 census with Mathew 40 and Mary 39. As well as Isabella (5), Christina (2), Mathew (12)- all born in Liverpool,(which the index confirms) there is another daughter Ann (17) "born Liverpool") but there is no record of her being born in Liverpool !!!

If we could assume that Ellen (working as a servant) is another daughter (apparently born Liverpool...but NO record) and absolutely NO record of Mathew marrying Mary, it seems to me that the family could have come over to Liverpool approx 1871 with Ann & Ellen with Mathew (jn) born 1872.

Sort that one out!!!

i have been told before that ellen was married to a martin grimes dont know if this is the same person or not as her married name was maher and she married a john/jack maher.dident know mathew was a blacksmith either but i can now ad that to my bits of information.

but am now more confused than before, the info i had been given was mathew b 1841 naples dont know who his wife was but was told he had six girls isobella and christina being two of them i have christina;s yob as 1881 its only a couple of years out also what confuses me is that i have the name spelt catellain/e but my mother said it was pronounced castellion!!!!

This COULD be it.

Ellen Castellain married Martin Grimes Liverpool 1883. Reg. No. LP/181/138.

Martin Grimes died (50) Liverpool Dec. 1892.

Ellen Grimes married John Maher Liverpool Dec. 1897. Reg. No. LP/232/52.



The ages are wrong on the 1891. Correct ages are on 1881 & 1901. (b.1841)

I wouldn't worry about the spelling...it's different every time...but obviously the same people.

I would suggest you send for the marriage cert. 1883 or 1897. This will give the fathers name.
