Thread: William & Agnes Mann, Lanarkshire

Brand new to this site so hope I'm not making a mess of this!!.

Looking for any details or help on William and Agnes Mann in Lanark / Renfrewshire, Glasgow. Born approximately 1811 and 1816 respectively I think! I am very confident that their son, who was my great grandfather, James Mann 1841 - 1893, who married Elizabeth Tyley had 9 children, of which John emigrated to New Zealand where my father was born. I seem to have come up against a brick wall, Scotlandspeople was a good place to start but has started to get expensive at a pound a go to download an image/ record. Any suggestions or advice would be gratefully accepted by this novice.

had a quick look on ancestry for you but there are quite a few william/james/elizabeth Mann inthe area. can you give any more info eg the childrens names and place of birth or any census references you have so people can look at these to see where to start

James Mann (1841 - 1893) death cert 560/00 0081)

Married Elizabeth Tyley (English 1851 - ??) no death or wedding certs.

From the census of 1881 (FHL Film 0203703, ref 662773) and 1891 (654/00 002/00 007) I have confirmed nine children and lived in at least two addresses in Rutherglen / Lanark, Glasgow:



Agnes Ellen 1869 - ?? wed Peter Fisher in 1891 cert 654/00 0016

George Edward 1870 - 1960 no certs, these dates are from my dads memory

Isabella 1875 - ?? wed Robert Smith Parker in 1900 cert 654/00 0099

Jessie 1879 - ?? no certs yet

James Gilmour 1881 - 1882 died of croup cert 654/00 0078

Robert 1883 - ?? no certs yet

John Mann - no certs (my grandfather)

William 1888 - no certs yet

Sarah 1890 - no certs yet



All the above certs have been taken from the Scotlandspeople website. I should be able to get a bit more data from my parents when I get home. I'm currently on a rig off the coast of Norway and doing most of this from memory of a family tree I started drafting 15 years ago when my son was born. At 81 my parents are still in fine health and should be able to help with some of the more recent stuff. John emigrated to New Zealand where my father (another George Edward) was one of three children. I'd like to trace the parents of James, my great grandfather, but don't know the first thing about internet genealogy and am getting tired of paying for certificates of false threads that have the Mann surname but no, or some untraceably distant, relation. Any help or suggestions gratefully welcome.

this would appear to be james and elizabeths marriage in 1867. it would fit in with birth date of first child too.

if you sent off for this certificate from GRO (£7)it would give you their fathers names and addresses at time of marriage etc.



I would have assumed elizabeth was from bolton area as they marry there, but cant find a birth to fit in area.



agnes was born in england in 1869 so looked on 1871 census for england and they are there in bolton so that confirms the marriage place.

looking at 1871 census again it gives elizabeths birth place as oswestry



so this could be her birth

in both census elizabeth father thomas is an inn keeper and they live in church street, oswestry.
