Thread: Census Record Help-What do codes mean please?

Morning Everyone,



Curious to know what the following means - I've been viewing Census info (for UK) on Ancestry.com, and notice when presented with a list of all persons with the name one enters appears, if ya hover the mouse over the entry in 'Record Type' another preview window opens with names of household etc. The query is, about 2/3 of the way down this window is the following:

ED, Institution or Vessel:11 (11 in my case). I don't understand what this means and can't find on Ancestry.com anything to help with this. Please, if anyone knows, please could they tell me?

ED -: Ecclesiastical District

Institution -: Prison, Orphange, Workhouse, Asylum, etc.

Vessel -: Ship



Your ref is 11, this is the Ecclesiastical District for the area.



If your ref was an institution there wouldn't be a number, but the name of the inst. as in say........South Yorkshire County Lunatic Asylum



If a vessel, the name of the ship.
