Thread: Marriage cert's from 1799 in Dorset

How do I go about getting a marriage cert from 1799.

I have William Galton and Sarah Milbourn married 16 Dec 1799 ,but would also like a cert. These two are a bit ellusive and I thought it might help if I had their parent's names. I live in hope Ha Ha

I am sorry but you won't be able to. Registration in England and Wales did not start until Sep 1837.

Some copies of earlier marriages may exsist but these are few and far between and will only have the names, date and stamp of area. These are not like the modern certificates but scraps of paper.

Hi there,

If you have the Parish of the marriage you should be able to get a copy of the entry in the Parish Books from the relevant Record Office. Although churches used standard sorts of entries, sometimes the Incumbent made comments in the margins or added other info. You might get lucky. If not, at least you will have a paper facsimile of the record. Different Record Offices make different charges.
