Default missing from 1871 census. Maybe in France?

I am looking for my ancestor Napoleon James Bolt & his wife Mary who are missing fron the 1871 census of UK. All of their children [except 1]are listed on the census either as married or with an uncle. The youngest Elisha, is also missing. Napoleon was born in Kent 1825 and MAry in LAmbeth 1822. Elisha was born 1862 in Camberwell. I wondered if perhaps they may have been in France or elswhere in Europe. Does anyone have the French census?

Napoleon & Mary were back in Lambeth at the time of their deaths 1879 & 1875. I would be grateful for any help here. Seeker

    Hi Seeker,

If my calculations are correct, I would have expected Napoleon and family (if still at same address) to be in Lambeth Kennington Second, district 5, unfortunately on Ancestry this district is missing..........it jumps from 4 to 6, could be the reason you can't find them in 1871 on the census. You could try e-mailing Ancestry, or asking for a look-up on Find my Past -I'm not sure if FMP has completed the 1871 census- someone else may know.

    Hope this helps

    Seeker,

Ignore previous message. I think I've found the address on the 1871, unfortunately it's being occupied by another family, infact families, also the full address is different from the 1861, it's now Smith St. Court (I think it says court) You will see on the 1861 No.5 Henry Place, Smith St. has a Pilgrim family, No.6 Sermon, and 7 and 8 is occupied by your Bolt's. In 1871 No.5 Smith St. Court has the Pilgrim's, No.6 Sermon's, however No.7 is now occupied by the Wise family, and No.8 by the Faulkner's. What a shame..........it would have been great to have traced them by their address........alas it wasn't to be. I hope the change of street name helps you find where it is/was, I know you have another request for info on Henry Place, Smith St.

    Best of luck.

Thanks Slizzy. I didnt realise it seems to be a block of flats. Napoleons wife, Mary`s family were there in 1841 so the family was there long term. Just that missing few years. Napoleon also changed occupation sometime after 1861 census. He died at the workhouse Marlborough street. death certificate says `of late a horse keeper`. I wish i had a magic mirror to see the past

    Cheers Seeker
