    Default Next step please/William Francis

I have my gt grandfathers marriage and death certificate. From the marriage certificate I know his fathers name was Thomas and he was deceased at the time of the marriage, and his occuption was engineer, my gt grandfather was a blacksmith, he was born about 1846. He married and died in Birkenhead, Cheshire, what can I do next to go to the next stage. Many thanks for any help

    Hi TJ,

You now need to see if your G Grandfather was at home with his parents on the 1841 census. If you post as much information as you have including names and ages I am sure someone will try and help

    Hi,

You obviously need a birth or a baptism to take you back further. To find your gt grandfather's age and place of birth the first place you can look is on the 1851 census. Ages and POB's were not always accurately put down or transcribed but it will start you off and you might get lucky first time, particularly as you know his father's Christian name. Tracing him back from the other later censuses which were taken every 10 years would be my first option.

Searching Birkenhead Parish Registers for a baptism and the National Registers for a Birth around 1846 are others.

    Hope this helps

    Regards

    Victoria
