    Default James and Isabella Tattersall

Dear Listers, I am interested in the name of Tattersall. In particular right now a James Tattersall born Goldshaw 1828/9. His wife is Isabella [surname unknown] born around 1828. According to the 1851 British Census the lived at 19 Hopgood St. He is a Rail Worker and she was Cotton Spinner. They appear to have decided to make a move to Australia. With two children they board the Mary Anne and arrive in 1857. My questions are.......... 1/ Did the couple in the 1851 census have children? 2/ How many? 3/ Their names? 4/ Did the same couple then have a daughter in Australia name Mary 1858? As in the past let me say I really do appreciate the help I get from my friends and fellow listers. Best wishes to all, Ray.

This COULD? be James and Isabella's marriage. Burnley would have been the registration district for Habergham Eaves. It isn't possible to know for certain who married who on this list.

G'day Slizzy, Sorry if I misled you. I knew that the 51 census showed no children. What am asking is in the 1861 does James and Isabella have children? That is if this couple have are still in the UK. Or if this couple left the UK, as I suspect, did they have children in the mean time? Thank you for the street name correction. My copy of the 1851 census page [although appreciated ] has seen better days. I really hope that clarifies things. Best wishes, Ray

Ray, I think that the 1850 marriage is the one your after:

Isabella Tattersall died in 1904, Dubbo, NSW the daughter of William & Elizabeth. (NSW BDMs)

(IGI) Isabella Watson was born 4 Mar 1828 baptised 20 Apr 1828 in Altham, Lancs daughter of William & Elizabeth (she also had a sister, Mary, born 16 Oct 1825, bpt 26 Jan 1826).

James and Isabella came to NSW in 1857, per 'Mary Anne' as you stated with children Sarah, 4, and Mark. Mark died in 1889, Redfern. According to FreeBMD there are many Tattersall children who were born and died between 1850-57, many called James etc., so there is no real way of knowing which belong to you unless you get certs or look up parish registers.

As you know (or maybe not) James' parents also came to NSW:

    1859 per 'Palmyra'

    Mark Tattersall, 49

    Mary Tattersall, 49

    Robert Tattersall, 23

    William Tattersall, 21

(Robt. & Wm. would be James' brothers). (NSW immigration)

In NSW James & Isabella had 6 children including aforementioned Mary in 1858, Liverpool:

    Elizabeth A. 1860, Campbelltown

James 1862, Penrith (died 1863, Penrith)

    Margaret 1864, Penrith

William 1866, Hartley (died 1888, Woonona)

    Isabella 1870, Hartley

(I did not include any surname variations in my search) (NSW BDM)

James died in 1895, Dubbo and Isabella in 1904, Dubbo

    Hope this helps...

    Baz

    Bazza,

Last things first........ You are always a help if not in a great big way then it's in some smaller way, but always a help.

I have picked up a great deal from your offering. Isabella death, and parentage, her birth place and sister.

I had seen the ships list you offered, but didn't consider the possibility that we might be looking at the parents and siblings.

Then you have given me the cream or the answer to one of my main questions., did Mary have siblings?

I have made contact with the people in charge of Dubbo cemetery for more info.

As usual you have been a great help, Ray

    Not a problem Ray,

I will see if I can trace Mark and Mary in NSW for you.

It appears William (James' brother) died in Redfern 1913. I couldn't find a suitable marriage for him, or any children.....

Robert on the other hand seems to have married Mary Ann Brabini in 1870, Sydney and had 7 children: Susan Emma (1871, Redfern- ), Robert John Thomas B. (1872, Waterloo- ), Elizabeth Ann (1874, Waterloo-1875, Waterloo), Mark (1876, Waterloo-1958, Balmain), Sarah Ann (1878, Waterloo-1878, Waterloo), Lavinia (born & died Waterloo 1880) and Richard (1882, Waterloo - born & died). Robert died 1899 in Waterloo.

If you'd like any more info I can look into it for you....

    Hi Ray,

James and Isabella's daughter Elizabeth Ann married a Henry Norris Woodley on the 14th April 1884 in Waterloo. They had 9 children. Elizabeth died on 22 May 1943 in Dubbo.

One of their niece's married a Thorley which links them to my family (and BigDon's).

Will do some more searches and see what I can find as they lived in the same area and at the same time as my other rellies so there may be more links.

Actually Ray, disregard what I said above: William married Ann and had ten children:

    Mary 1867, Redfern

    Richard 1868, Redfern

    Sarah 1869, Redfern

    Ann 1870, Redfern

    Mark 1871, Redfern

    John 1872, Waterloo

    Hannah 1874, Waterloo

    William 1875, Waterloo

    Susan 1876, Waterloo

    James 1879, Waterloo.

    ----------------------------------------------

As the name 'Susan' seems to come up a lot I believe that Mark Tattersall (James, Robert, William's father) died 1882, Sydney. s/o Susan, no father listed.

His wife Mary, is most likely the one who died in 1876, Waterloo dau of John and Ann.
